Re: Happy to Hear
Totally agree!

I think it's great they're expanding and making it accessable to as many people as it will reach!

AT&T and Orage Open Source & SDN
Again, this point back to collaborate. At some point all companies will need to collaborate to remain competitive.

It is unfortunate that AT&T just realized that they need to have standards and industry discussions.

It is great that they will be able to strealining vendors platforms.

Collaboration, streamlining and standards save time, money and resources as well as increase efficiency and quality of service.

Interoperability is always good. When I worked as a tester and programmer I always stressed that the systems and applications needed to be interoperable. I always got a funny look but in the end they listened and were glad they did.

There's a critical point
As a competitor moves into a market or tech area, at first they are a small corner of it, and all the advantages are with keeping their few customers tied to themselves, because losing their (rare) customer is costly and getting another one is very expensive. As they grow bigger, it becomes easier to gain adherents, the advantages of defecting decrease (and thus more of them stay home), and it makes more and more sense for them to continue to adhere.

Eventually, the competitor gets big enough so that it approximates the market itself -- and that's when it makes sense to abolish all the "internal" barriers (which are inefficient) and take down the fences (because more adherents wander in than out).

A famous example: small, new, fast-growing economies start out behind tariff walls and become free-trader when they're big enough.  Or if you look at publishing, small operations often try to control distribution tightly; big ones tend to think of piracy as "free publicity."

It looks like SDN is at just about that point. Orange+ATT may be a big enough "accretion point" to draw many of the rest in.

Happy to Hear
I'm happy to hear they plan on making the model universal. It seems they understand that by doing so they are allowing everyone to benefit, rather than just focusing on the benefit they could have themselves by making it something that would only work with other AT&T systems.

ATT & Orange
"The hope is that having common standards and interfaces will speed up development cycles, simplify integration efforts, reduce costs and increase operational efficiency." that sounds sensible. You almost wonder why other companies are trying to do the same.
