Re: Let's go A la Carte
Yes, I agree!

I think it would be awesome for people to be able to pick certain stations that they actually would pay to watch. It would make things so much simpler.

@Michelle:

Yes, pretty often we seem to hit the barrier with licensing related things. Not sure if UK has eased regulations, licensing etc. But that seems to be a key diffreence between the two.

OTA
OTA is well established in Europe: UK digital broadcast platform Freeview is in 19 million homes in the UK, for example. But that's because Europe has a history of OTA broadcast services. In fact, Freeview is a standardized platform specifically developed by broadcasters, and includes 60 channels delivered free to the consumer.

This is so interesting. It is sad that we are not there yet. I undersatnd industry limitations, regulations etc. But certainly UK always seems to be ahead with such initiatives.

Slim Package
Slim package is a good business model. So far it seems like a good model but not yet for consumers. I personally am a Verizon customer and that is the case for me. The standard set of channels in the package obviously miss majority of my likes and I may have to have atleast a subset of them added, for which i have to pay the price in addition to the slim package. Eventually I would end up paying much more, which is not the whole objective  that we started with.

With some refinement, we could get there slowly but certainly.

@JohnBarnes I think you are spot on. Slim bundles are an evolutionary step on a path to a la carte.

@John I'm not so optimistic, but I am hopeful you're right about this. I do not subscribe to cable but might consider it in a future that lets me pick only my favorite channels from a menu.

Re: Let's go A la Carte
afwriter,

"Slimmed down" packages is the first fallback position in what will quickly beome a race for true a la carte; the slimmest a package can get to is, after all, 1 channel. Which of course is a la carte. The pay TV carriers are trying to feel better about having lost; but today's slimmed-down packages will be competing with "slimmer" ones next year and "ultra-slim" and "ultimate slim" after that, getting smaller and smaller, down to 1.

I agree! I would so much rather just buy the app that I use and actually want rather than just pay for a whole package that I don't really need or want.

The industry could use disruption in the content distribution side. Licensing keeps coming up as a barrier to true a la carte consumption.

< Their economics are tied to bundling the great, OK and fairly awful into one must-have bundle. > @Adi other sellers do the same with packages that people take only for the one or two things packed in with 3 or 4 mediocore ones.
