Also it's important to establish good and healthy business relationships early on for the good of the future devices/products/technology advancements.

Couldnt agree more!

It's importnant not to trash or put down other businesses because you never know when you'll need to team up together or gain from something they've done.

@John:

In total agreement with you. Partnerships would certainly enhance the model if we think of bringing more smart brains together in the thinking process. This could enhance vision, goal, process and finally the end result.

ms. akkinenni,

Yes, and "Today's rival could be tomorrow's peer" is also a much more succinct way to make the same point. We're in an age of looking for partners rather than hunting down opponents.

 never trash the competition because next year your product/service/software will have to work with theirs, and the year after that, the two of you will have to team up to bring more former rivals into the partnership

@John:

Great point. This essentialy is the key for collaborative development. Today's rival could be tomorrow's peer is the mantra that should be followed in this market. Anything can happen anytime.

Re: Switch the answers and they're even better
Mike, I think the general gentleness we see in this industry toward the competition is a direct consequence of the gathering momentum toward open systems: never trash the competition because next year your product/service/software will have to work with theirs, and the year after that, the two of you will have to team up to bring more former rivals into the partnership. As I said, there's really only one open system; every system that becomes open eventually joins it. So there's not much room now or in the future for "legacy" trash talk.

Re: Switch the answers and they're even better
John, he was careful not to openly trash the other two entities that I asked about, but I think his answer about ECOMP pretty much said it all. In the end, people will vote with their feet based on what actually works in the real world. We'll see!

Switch the answers and they're even better
Rice had many good things to say but I notice that when you asked about how much ECOMP would overlap other open systems, he sort of slid into the usual open-source language about the way that, when open systems of any kind intersect, they tend to find ways to use and interact with each other. Yet his very next answer about what this will mean for ECOMP's development, citing Hadoop as a precedent, pointed to the real way these things work: in the long run there is only one open system, because that meet-merge-connect process gradually brings them all together. So the commitment to ECOMP is the commitment to move further down the road to where most users don't think about apps, software, or even systems; they just "do stuff."
