Vodafone to Launch NB-IoT
It is great that more companies are embracing and actually using IoT. Vodafone identifies problems that needed to be addressed, developed a solution and solved this problems all while remaining competitive. Other companies need to do the same.

"While there is still work to do, we believe it could be one of the fastest rollouts of new technology that we've ever completed."

This is exciting news.

And that's where that collaboration between yechnology and business / executive teams plays extremely important role. Unless business community gets all the insight from technology folks about what to expect and How certain technology is going to change their buisness process or operations for a deserving outcome, they will not be able make the call for change.

The need to invision it and know how to make it work. They need to understand the ins and outs. Being able to fully understand how a product works is obviously important.

There's a really major insight under this, which I think Mr. Morakowski has incorporated into his thinking so much that it might not have gotten the attention it deserves here.

There are two ways for data to be big: number of records and record length. If you think of data in conventional spreadsheet form, number of records=rows and record length=columns. Big data is either data with numerous cases (number of records) or with lengthy descriptions of each case (record length) or both.

Over on the data science side of the fence, mostly I see everyone thinking about and working with datasets that have increasing record lengths (hundreds or thousands of fields/columns describing each case). But for many business situations, it's sheer number of records that is the real thing to be coped with, and very high numbers of records are much more easily and better reported by a simple transmission system that deals with low volumes of data from any one entity.

Walmart does want to know about its customers, and customer records involve hundreds or thousands of fields = high data volume; when you buy a bunch of groceries, hardware, clothes, and garden stuff they want to be able to browse you and millions of other customers to see if there's a relationship between what you buy and how much of it across categories.  That's the "cute" part of data science that gets all the attention.

But the "bread and butter" part is very simple questions like how long a can of Dr. Pepper stays in the cooler, or what size T-shirt they run out of faster.  And for that you don't need a long record -- you need a lot of records. Data scientists don't find that as intriguing because it's really just a matter of speeding up algorithms to handle that volume, but that's a huge part of where the growth is going to be, and Vodafone is dead right to be focusing their attention there.

Also it is very important to provide that education to businesses. Unless they get to know the real insight of how this is going to work, they will not be able to visualise and correlate this to their needs.

I think they need a clear path and diection nd be able to take it from there. It's aweome what they're working on though and I think it really keeps digital transformation going.
