Re: Apple TV
Thats very interesting! And yes I'm a Comcast customer and I do notice their strides to keep developing and staying on top of their game when dealing with technology.

Re: Apple TV
back in the day (Tivo was launched in 1999-2000) cable companies tried to saty out of owning/developing technology. That was more of a vendor play. So they preferred to license technology, which many did with TiVo. That's still somewhat true, but the big guys are doing a lot more development. Comcast, in particular, is increasingly hands-on with technology.

I have always wondered why Tivo wasn't acquired by a cableco... I suppose Tivo's ad skipping features wouldn't have survived a cableco acquisition?

Too bad Apple TV doesn't have a DVR feature.. But now I'm wondering when the ad skipping patents expire....

Re: Apple TV
I think the cable industry has seen what has happened to the music industry with Apple. That's entirely what it doesn't want – it still wants to own the customer experience, no matter how bad it is. I would say it is getting better, but still needs improvement. Good thing there is Apple to put the pressure on.

Microsoft did this a while ago...?
I'm not sure if I see how this TV guide from Apple is all that different from other guides? I think Microsoft has a similar feature on Xbox. But the app ecosystem on Xbox, admittedly, isn't as vast as tvOS or iOS, so there probably aren't as many video options.

I'm wondering if Youtube or Twitch will be part of this video guide... THAT would be interesting. But doubtful if Google or Amazon would want to play nice with Apple to make it happen. And I think Google might be able to do something similar AND incorporate Youtube -- and the combination would be much more useful.

Re: Apple TV
My main TV has Roku built in which is amazing, but I do have two boxes in other rooms.  If I was forced to replace a box I would probably buy another box because I would be afraid to miss out on speed or content.

Really a culture issue
"....the larger players may see it as an attempt to subvert their relationship with their customers."

They're seeing that because that's pretty much been the basis of Apple's corporate culture (and astonishing growth) ever since the dark days of the early 90s.  It's how they came back and how they grew to the giants they are: identify a content-based industry and provide a new way of accessing it, as much as possible through an Apple hardware-software-locked monopoly. Whenever possible, sell it as "progress" and "good for the consumer."

They didn't climb to the top of that heap of money by finding customers de novo.

Re: Apple TV
@afwriter - do you have the Roku box or dongle/stick? Apparently that's where the growth is now coming from, rather than the standard STB box.

Re: Apple TV
@Joe - Sure, as a consumer the advantages are pretty obvious - There is a clear benefit to viewers from being able to access content more easily...

It's upstream challenges - TV is a complicated entangled business, full of legacy structures. It's all coming down, but very slowly because the business isn't dying as quickly as music and people aren't quite as frightened.

I think Apple hasn't been able to succeed in the TV/video space - at least not as much as with other initiatives - because it doesn't accept that. Netflix, by contrast, has done a far better job driving some pretty dramatic changes in the industry, but in a way that is more balanced and more realistic about the degree of change they can engineer.
