Re: facta non verba
Yes! It's sometimes scary to see how fast the world is evolving into an all technological world. It's exciting, but still nerve wracking at the same time.

Re: Healthcare...
mhhf1ve,

On the third hand, maybe eventually we can hire doctors who are actually actors, very good at looking like wise old healers while they just say whatever the big-data-driven algorithms tell them to.  Best of both worllds.

(And for the  step beyond that, see "Today I am Paul" by Martin L. Shoemaker, science fiction story that got a lot of attention last year: the robot caretaker that is whoever you need it to be ...)

Re: Healthcare...
JohnBarnes, You're very correct. The field of healthcare is riddled with pitfalls and liability. The placebo (and nocebo) effect can really mess up medical treatments and scientific understanding -- and as you say, spur unwarranted trust in snake oil salesmen. And more data won't necessarily help to counteract that. Big data can just mean more garage in and garbage out....

@dcawrey, I think we are getting close.  Not being connected is like having a smart phone with no service or connections, it becomes a "dumbell".  The value is the connection and the information it provides.

Re: Healthcare...
@JohnBarnes, I fully agree.  It is a case of Back to the Future.  We want all the advances of medicine but still rely on the idea of the Family Doctor.

But I agree with mhhf1ve, when we augment the Doctor with sensors, connectivity to the Doctor, and better "care" information, we may just embrace the digital touch.

Re: facta non verba
Imagine a day soon when we find it weird a device isn't connected to the internet. I think that day is coming soon.

For now, it's still the other way around. But it won't be long before we all find anything without the internet to be weird.

@clrmoney I have my doubts about such cities proving cheaper to live in. I think the bigger selling point is having access and convenience.

Re: Healthcare...
mhhf1ve,

Also, healthcare, like housing, has a not-fully-explainable cloud of myth and symbolism about it; people want personal care from a wise old sage, not a technician that just zaps it and lets you go on your way. (This is why alternative care is such a huge industry in every nation -- the pills don't work but the doctor sounds believable and understandable). I suspect that if big data gets used effectively in health care it will trigger a wave of nonsense and permanently split the consumer population into the Rational/As Well As They Can Be and the Contented/As Well As They Happen to Be.  Looking at the political explosions that happen around anything to do with the human body, that's an always-go-slow area.

Healthcare...
It's really surprising that healthcare didn't make it in a higher priority -- and just squeezed into the cutoff spot.

I suppose the risks of healthcare done wrong are higher...?
