Re: vCPE = lose the STB?
I also think it's so important to note that a lot of success that's been happening ltely has come from partnerships of companies. I think that's what can make a device or new idea so successul.

vCPE = lose the STB?
On the pay-TV side of things, getting rid of the set-top box or more correctly, finding ways to deploy new services on existing, limited STBs has been a big push for some operators. It's not just the cost of the device, it's also the truck roll to install it that hits the bottomline. There's also more flexibility when negotiating with STB manufacturers the more virtualized the CPE is.

In addition, now the growth of OTT services has resulted in non-SP devices from Smart TVs, Roku-type STBs and dongles like Chromecast have created new options for operators that can integrate with them, as we saw with the recent announcements from Android TV, partnering with Nagra and Ericsson, both long standing pay TV vendors.

Re: SPs Highlights
The on demand capabilities of SDN are what's really interesting to me. Prior to this movement towards software-enabled networks, it was really hard to do a quick deployment. Now, with SDN, it's going to become push buttom, which is really helpful.

Better than average for an industry white-paper survey
Surveying the purchanse-decision people at the biggest buyers to see why they think they are buying SDN was a pretty smart move (especially in a world where surveys are so often not-smart).  Makes me hope the next time around they'll ask a few more questions about the breakdown within each of their big categories; eseentially what this says is that up till now they've been buying SDN mostly to get "classic SDN" features, and they are continuing to buy it for those reasons in hopes of getting "new SDN" features. There are probably deeper insights available -- but at least the simple, self-evident one they found this time out is well-founded and well-identified.
