Re: Vevo vs. YouTube - business class
I agree. Both have positive and nagative attributes to them. I've always been more of a YouTube person, but I can see why people wouldn't rather YouTube over the commpetitor.

Re: $$$
They have done a very nice job--when curating the musical interlude corner at @DailyOutsider, I have made sure that we feature "VEVO" as they are in fact the defacto brand for the official channels being produced and published on YouTube.    They would still need to maintain the powerful distribution channel that YouTube continues to be--not withstanding the existing minefields it has to navigate thru.    Maybe Amazon may end up eating them up!!

Vevo vs. YouTube - business class
There's the corporate market, too, and the question of whether to go with Vevo or YouTube is not obvious, as I learned when managing content marketing for a SaaS firm. Vevo's advantages have included higher quality and no video ads, thus no competitive threats. On the other hand, it has less traffic and charges monthly fees. Surprised not to see more on that topic, but guess it's niche compared with music video, the flavor - tune? - of the day.

Re: $$$
Precisely, but it sounds here like Vevo doesn't want to rely on Facebook or YouTube/Google for the demographic and personal data gathering. So I expect to see a "Vevo app" or some other development that will give Vevo the direct data that it needs to grow its media generating empire.

Re: $$$
mhhf1ve, Yep. That is one reason why so many sites/apps that are actually non-, a-, or anti- social "allow" you to use a FB ID to log in -- it's a way to gain access to much more demographic data.

These businesses that are dependent on eyeball tracking are going to be more and more interested in viewers' personal data. Without a facebook-like app to track user locations and activities, it's going to be difficult for Vevo to collect the necessary real-time data.

Re: I want my MTV
I was about to say that expanding Vevo beyond YouTube sounds like a plan to create a "MTV-2.0" (or an MTV-3.0 if MTV is already trying to do this). I'm not sure how Vevo handles the licensing of its videos? Companies that rely on music licensing (like Pandora, Spotify, etc) are limited in what they can really do. That's not so say Vevo couldn't become as big as Netflix, but at the end of the day, original programming seems to be the differentiator and the path to growth in a field where anyone else can also license the content.

Re: $$$
afwriter,

I'm actually most impressed at where the holes are in the research. They know they're getting a young audience to watch music videos, often all the way through but certainly more than just flipping by, on mobile devices. That's quite a bit to have figured out given the state of market research in our field. Now, WHICH young people, in WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES?

Bored college students in class?

Enthusiastic fans getting as much as they can of their idoru while waiting in line or riding the bus?

Party scene kids being too cool for the gathering they're in?

(My guess): Low wage workers taking any route that offers mental escape from work?

Figuring out WHICH young people in WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES is the obvious next step I think; wonder if Vevo has already taken it and are keeping the results proprietary.

The difficulty in reporting new-ish consumer services
"Huggers' presentation was long on enthusiasm but short on specifics."

A sentence which, with a substitution for "Huggers", could have been written about every business attempt since about WW2 to exploit consumer access to new (or tweaked) technical means of communication. He's at least realistic enough to admit how much he doesn't know!
