Re: Necessary but will it be sufficient?
Great points! I also think it's important to partner up in order to get things moving in the right direction. Partnerships are difficult, but can bring incredible things when done right.

@mhhf1ve Indeed. We've been seeing a lot aobut open source lately. Is that the trend in general, or for the telecom industry in particular?

interesting to see...
The trend of open source infrastructure projects is pushing these proprietary systems to improve and build some unique and legacy-supporting features. It'll be interesting to see how the network ecosystems evolve to take talent from both proprietary and open source efforts.

Necessary but will it be sufficient?
For its declared, intended purposes of competing in open source network services with ECOMP, AT&T must have some sizable users/clients/participants who are not AT&T. So if they were ever going to get anywhere at all, something like Orange's decision was going to be a first step. It will be interesting to see how many more steps there are and if any other potential partners take them. The journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. So does the wandering into a cul de sac of 1000 yards and for that matter the plunge of 1000 feet.

Ecomp test drive
With the virtualization that AT&T are testing ECOMP to see what it had to offer like the virtual part and other things. This may be a hit for them.
