Re: The Human Face of DevOps
Good points and I agree! i think teams are vital in building together and building something that a consumer would gladly purchase and/or use.

@Alison, great perspective and way to make the projects and implementation a real success.  It truly is in the hands of the multiple users.

Re: The Human Face of DevOps
Thanks Adi, great points.  I also believe that if we opened up the "user" markets, we would create real opportunity beyond those just buying the technology - "a busines use case".

Re: The Human Face of DevOps
I totally agree -- and in speaking with organizations that have implemented DevOps, they consistently credit their success to first approaching people about the move to this philosophy and software-development strategy. Without buy-in from all involved, there's no way DevOps (or any other change) will work and that's why it's vital to include teams in the build-up process.

Re: The Human Face of DevOps
@Dhagar - Agreed. The tech industry's fascination with technology is a positive generally speaking. After all, you are less likely to invent a pathbreaking technology if you are not passionate about it. But ultimately it's people that technology is designed to serve, and sometimes as an industry, we are guilty of getting so excited about what a technology can do, it actually interferes with our ability to provide the best experience for customers.

Rethinking accountability
One genuinely cool new idea in this piece is the quiet change in the nature of accountability -- accountability of course has always included the questions "for what" and "to whom".  In traditional accountability, "for what" was "For testably behaving like the specification" and "to whom" was "to the people who sent you the specification" at the coding level. (At the spec level it was "accountable for writing a specification that accurately reflects user requests plus IT policies" and "ultimately accountable to your boss, who gets input from users.")

This model of accountability appears to be direct accountability to users for giving them what they need. That's a much shorter, tighter cycle.  Over time it will result in very different structures: much greater responsiveness, trust, resilience, and reliability, of course, but also many more re-inventions of the wheel and a probably a permanent problem with keeping up with reconciliaition and protecting internal data integrity.

Good to see something about DevOps from someone who appears to have been there.
Hadn't realized it till now but very little of what I've read about DevOps appeared to be written by anyone who had ever walked around on a shop floor or sat in on team meetings. This piece has that quality (which, honoring Mr. Zalesko's language, we might call "human.") I have a much better picture of what his pods are doing after reading this (and it makes much more sense) than I've had from any of our past interviewees and writers. Bravo!
