RE: remote control button usage...
Haha so true! I think a lot of the time even though something is complex, but we do it every day we dont want to simplify things.

RE: remote control button usage...
@mhh such is the problem with soooo many 'improvements'. Microsoft is quite bad at user experience problem-solving. Windows 8 might be one of its best examples of how not to solve an interface problem...

@Adi yes, you are right, but also this days most of the Co. expect from early adopters to act as beta testers - one way or other... sad reality...

RE: remote control button usage...
It's a very tricky balance, because you will always have early adopters, tech savvy and keen to get something new at one end, but you must also satisfy late adopters who just want something simple, easy - and most importantly, familiar. Not all that easy being a service provider.

It's funny, we are such creatures of habit that when things are simplified we find them more difficult.

RE: remote control button usage...
Those are very interesting stats. Remote controls with gazillions of buttons might be optimized for far fewer buttons if usage data can filter out which buttons are uncommonly used (like the "down" button).

But then again.. Microsoft tried to reduce the complexity of its Office Suite software with the "Ribbon" user interface, and that was more than a little confusing at first... (even though it was supposed to "solve" a lot of problems with confusion and complexity)
