Re: Satellite options...
Heh. well, there have been "software defined radio" projects trying to get off the ground for quite some time... THAT would be a real breakthrough in universal wireless connectivity.

@mhhf1ve, I think that makes great sense - a universal connection.  We will remember that we heard it here first!

Re: Satellite options...
I was thinking more along the lines that consumers might someday just call everything related to connectivity from AT&T "Uverse" something. It could be wireless, TV, DSL or IoT....

@mhhf1ve, good analysis.  Maybe it will mature to the capability that the customer will not even have to be educated but it will offer familiar choices and becomes more of a utility, as opposed to unique features.

Re: Satellite options...
It'll be interesting to see how many "flavors" of IoT will exist in the near future. Wireless standards haven't exactly been branded well for consumers. Everyone thinks WiFi is wireless internet, but we'll see how consumers' concepts change....

Re: Satellite options...
@mhhf1ve, key issue.  What I understand AT&T is building though are strategic layers that will align the capabilities with the device/use-case.

It truly does give more options to make those extensions financially feasible.

I envision that they are building a platform that enables them to "strategically" utilize the right level of service, based on the wide variety of demand - that will only grow.

If they have figured this out right - it may be a winning combination!

First and furious
Being first has dangers, but knowing that the IoT is absolutely inevitable, you'd think there would be more big companies taking the risk of being more aggressive pursuing the opportunities.

Re: Satellite options...
Did Khan say if AT&T is open to partnering with alternative operators like SigFox who are running dedicated low-power network, or is intent to own the entire IoT equation with its own LTE network?
