Re: Virtual Reality
I agree! I think it has become super popular especially recently and I think it has come so far, but also can go so much further.

Re: Vivid experience or better understanding, or both?
afwriter,

Allan Dwan, one of the great war-movie directors --I think it was him, I can't find the exact quote -- used to say you could tell a good story from a private's eye view or from a general's eye view but you couldn't do both at the same time. (I think Richard Attenborough came pretty close with A Bridge Too Far).  It's sort of the same problem with covering sports: bodies pushed to their utmost, or strategy to win the game -- not always easy to see both at once, and yet, as you say, you really need both.

Re: Vivid experience or better understanding, or both?
I don't think either will win out completely because they both have their own benefits.  I feel like this is going to be a situation where we can't even imagine how the technology will change the way we view our favorite sports.

Vivid experience or better understanding, or both?
There are two different ways video enhances watching sports:

1. The camera can "stand" where no person can, so you can see things clearly that formerly only the players or refs could have seen. It's a more vivid experience.

2. Illustrations and explanations can be superimposed on the screen (the blue circle around the hockey puck, the picture of the strike zone in baseball, etc) to make it much easier to see what is really going on.

These two ways are often in conflict; the first one leads to highlight reels in which all we see are the three most "exciting" (meaning, visually busy) minutes of a game, the second to lengthy discussions, scenarios, and what-ifs.  VR is going to amp both of them up at once; I wonder if one or other side will "win" and come to dominate, or if the dichotomy will simply intensify?
