Re: WOW has potential
I think Amazon owns them now?

I got lucky when they first started and was invited as a VIP, so I get next day delivery for free.

It's come in handy a couple of times when I didn't have the most comfy shoes packed for a trip - I just had new ones sent to my hotel for the next day!

Re: WOW has potential
@batye you're right about it being common practice, though most retailers that use it have done so for years. Zappos really had a different approach that focused on service rather than price. But I suppose they see that people still want to get the best price they can and are willing to shop elsewhere for that.

Re: WOW has potential
@faryl Zappos recently made changes, actually. There used to never be discount codes for the site, but now there are for people who sign up for the loyalty program. I'm not so into shoes myself, but I have daughters who seem to always "need" a new pair for this or that particular purpose. Also if it's on Zappos for the same price as on another site, I'd go with Zappos because of its faster delivery time and easy return process -- coupled with nicely entertaining emails.

Re: WOW has potential
When I used to have a blog, I reached out to Tony Hsieh with some questions for a post I was writing. He was super friendly & responsive.

I love zappos (or at least used to - I longer have the shoe-buying budget I once did)

Seen & Heard: WOW Kicks NFV Tires
I was shocked by reading this of how important this is that wow kicks NFV tires. My opinion is that I think it would be good. With the satisfaction rate being good. Also with the good hardware-based solution. I hope it beneficial for the residential customers.

@elizabethv That's great that they were open to learning how to adapt their culture to improve the workplace. More businesses should be like that.

Re: WOW has potential
@Ariella - It is amazing how much company culture really can affect a product and company. I worked for the University of Phoenix for awhile a few years back, and shortly after they had a ton of layoffs, company culture was really in the toilet. They actually went to Zappos and asked for help in redirecting company culture. Something they were in the process of doing around the time I left (I had my first son.) I still talk to some people that work there and they seem happy. Potentially mostly happy that their wages are pretty decent compared to what some people face.

Re: WOW has potential
@faryl well, they do ask for that with their choice of name. Wowing customers is actually identified as a value for those who adopt the Zappos model.  In Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose, Tony Hsieh, the company's CEO tells the story of  the creation and evolution of the distinctive company culture alongside a bit of his own life story. Wowing customers is one of the definitive components of the culture there, and that approach can really extend to just about any service.
