NFV: Security Issue or Security Opportunity?
This article I like because it talks about the NFV security issue and security opportunity. Every customer service for the NFV always like to know that there property is protected so this article is very important and useful for everyone. It also talks about 1.) the services providers are jacked up about the benefits of NFV. 2.) It also includes flexibility, agility, reduced costs, and finally there are also new security risks to consider.

Re: Federated scalpel-like approach
It definitely seems like a boon to security to be able to spin up security measures at a touch of a button... creating possible honeypots or other tactical measures on demand. But how will the black hats respond? Does the ease of managing a network also mean that if a bad guy gets access, that they can also hide their nefarious crimes more easily as well? If a tool can cut one way, can it not also be used for "evil" purposes? Or are we dealing with a tool that can better identify who is wielding it, so that it can't be used for unauthorized purposes at all....?

"IT" meaning telcos' enterprise customers?  Or...?

Re: Federated scalpel-like approach
Mike, so does that sounds like it's easier to manage the VMs. Unikernals would be easier to manage and more efficient to manage then I think. That could improve security.

Re: NFV Security Issue Opportunities
@Mike, that's incredible - but the typical result when we apply tactical solutions to a strategic problem - and then we wonder why we can't get more investment?  It really gets to the point that the value of technology is not building infrastructure - which is cost - it is solving business/technical and user problems - which then produce a definable ROI.  Those numbers would be hard to justify!

typo. Meant $81.6 bilion on second reference as well.

"So you have $81.6 billion of security guarding $4.5 trillion capex spend."

Re: Federated scalpel-like approach
Paraphrasing here. In a VNF enviroment, the carrier knows where every VM is. If the carrier spins up a critical VM, it can also spin up a firewall VM next to it. It's a more targeted approach to security instead of forcing all of the traffic through a bottleneck and large firewall.

Re: NFV Security Issue Opportunities
Thanks. It was a good presensation. After Bryan was done, he had a guy from Intel and a guy from Ericsson on stage with him for more on security. Fun fact from one of them:  telcos will spend $1 trillion on capex while IT will fork out $3.5 trillion. Gartner says security spend will be about $81.6 billion. So you have $61.6 billion of security guarding $4.5 trillion capex spend.

NFV security opportunity
I think it would be a security opportunity so they can see what is out there to meet it better and more convenient for them.

Federated scalpel-like approach
Would the scalpel-like, precise approach result in improved security, from built-in redundancy simply from a more distributed approach?
