Re: Proprietary hardware / hybrids
I don't doubt that Level3's roadmap is going to get copied by plenty of other ISPs (or CSPs or whatever people want to call them now). Telcos and cablecos and nation-wide CDNs are all going to want to do the same things. It'll be interesting to see how the regulatory environment adapts to the networks.

Re: Proprietary hardware / hybrids
@mhhf1ve My guess is that future will involve some of the same things Level 3 is doing.

Look, this is simply the future of these service providers. And it behooves them to get involved in the transition as soon as they can. This is especially true when customers start asking for this technology. I'm sure CenturyLink's accounts will start doing so quite soon.

Re: Proprietary hardware / hybrids
It will also be interesting to see how Level 3's roadmap affects CenturyLink's plans for the future, too. The consolidation of infrastructure (eg. tw telecom + Level3) in the communication service provider market is getting a bit tangled now. I used to know the difference between an ILEC and CLEC....

Proprietary hardware / hybrids
This is interesting because, typically, with large, major network service providers and their ilk, you tend to see migrations to hybrid solutions as the fundamentals get pushed to the network edge.  Even virtualization-evangelizing whitebox-thumping pundits have long held that proprietary hardware isn't going away.  But, for Level 3, it appears to be.  It will be worth watching to see who follows and when (if, of course, anybody).

Improvements
"With SDN controls, we have automated thousands of tasks, significantly increasing operational scale, shortening lead times, standardizing configurations and improving customer experience,"...

Here is another set of buy ins from SDN controls. I would like to highlight lead times and CX. Both are very critical and go hand in hand. Improvement in these areas certainly will put Levl 3 in a very good spot.

White box Servers
As part of its SDN/NFV transformation, Level 3 is leveraging white box servers to implement services faster and with more scalability.

Leveraging white box servers is surely a smart move by Level 3. As mentioned fast and scalable services are very critical.

Re: Level 3's Virtualization Migration Roadmap
One fact that I think is really good about the level 3 is that the SDN orchestration and control system includes more than 75,000 network elements.

Completely agree with you.

75K network elements is quiet a big number and that is very impressive about Level 3's SDN and control system.

Re: Virtualuzation travels many ways
@clrmoney:

Agree with you that firewall and routers are tow first things that come into mind thinking about virtualization. Paying right attention to both will ensure that transition would be smooth.

Re: Level 3's Virtualization Migration
These moves away from proprietary equipment is good for the networking industry overall. Level 3 has long been a leadering in networking and datacenter technology, and I think it's seen what Google and Facebook have done to really turn networking on its head. It's following the best practices that are available today.

Level 3's Virtualization Migration
Dumping proprietary equipment and standardizing networks is a good strategy for Level 3's virtualization migration. The use of  white boxes will make the process faster and more efficient for Level 3.
