Re: Charter's rollout
msilbey - Yes, there's been little news on that for a while. At one point there was a lot of information coming from their vendors - Zodiac and ActiveVideo - but seems to have quietened down a little more recently. Charter has always been one of the less accessible MSOs in my experience, but usually when operators get bigger they more keen to communicate with media and analysts. Hopefully we'll hear more from them moving forward.

Re: Set Top Box Virtual
DCawrey,

And that would make the virtual service switcher even more attractive -- telcos, OTTs, packagers, everyone could start competing with "switcherbait" so that you could quickly try new offerings free, and then, if you liked them, add them into your service for minimum cost. The physical STB won't be able to deliver that, at least not without a hugely different infrastructure behind it, but the virtual-internal is literally made for it.

Re: Set Top Box Virtual
@JohnBarnes As if using cable isn't bad enough, these set top boxes are just ridiculous. Discovery on them is impossible. If you've ever spent 20 minutes just trying to find something to watch, then you know. It's really that bad.

Re: Cost effecient
Afwriter,

Interesting question for all cord cutters (including me; our household is cord-cut now): is there even potentially a technology that could induce "cord-splicing," i.e. going back to the cord? I really don't foresee any; I think cord-cutting is a one-way street. And, as we learn in demographics, when the death rate rises and the birth rate falls, a species doesn't have long to go in the grand scheme of things.

Re: Set Top Box Virtual
At a guess, eventually several of the consumer electronics giants will get together on a "universal" internal box with relatively simple connectivity, which many of the OTT and cable purveyors will then write "virtual set top box" software for. The physical appliance is obnoxiously expensive, inherently not maintenance-free, and often has to be changed with changes of service.

The step after that, of course, is the virtual service switcher that looks at what you want to watch and switches you virtually between various services to get the best price or signal quality or both.

Re: Set Top Box Virtual
Virtual set top boxes sure do sound like an ideal product. I can't believe we're still using these boxes. They should have been replaced with something more streamlined years ago. This is just another reason why the cable industry is in some trouble with selling cable services at all - too complicated.

Cost effecient
STB virtualization must save the company millions in repair and replacement, and if I wasn't planning on being a cord cutter I would look forward to ditching big ugly boxes around my beautiful TV.

Charter's rollout
I'm really interested to know more about how Charter's STB virtualization strategy is going, but the company is incredibly close-mouthed with the press. I was hoping that would change once the acquisitions of TWC and BHN were complete, but so far that's not the case.
