Re: Vivendi Pay TV
@elizabethv LOL, well "bridge" actually makes too much sense for these companies. If one is in the service of connecting people, then one is bridging across the miles to bring them together. The food thing may just be the assumption that people have positive assoications with those snacks. But in the interest of promoting healthier eating, shouldn't we be seeing names like Kale and Spinach replacing Jelly Bean?

Yes, very weird! I'm always wondering where they come up with these new name. Definitely interesting, but a little strange.

Re: Vivendi Pay TV
@Ariella, personally, I have to wonder if companies aren't just picking names at random anymore. A lot like the Andriod update names of Marshmallow, Lollipop and KitKat, then Samsung had Jelly Bean. I think you're onto something with the "original" factor. People just enjoy the odd name and go with it. I did kind of enjoy the "Jelly Bean" idea..... Root canal I'd probably hesistate, but if they keep up with that theme, they might have something. Maybe next will be A Crown and a Bridge. :-)

Re: Vivendi Pay TV
@Adi I take it the name was supposed to reflect digging deep or something like that. As for names with attitude that aren't necessarily relevant to what the business about (as here no dentistry involved) I realized that what a novel about the ad business said was very true. The creative businesses all take on names that have no reflection on what they do like Strawberry Frog (that's a real one, I checked). I think that may work for people in the known because they are also in the industry if they are hiring people from there. But when you're selling directly to consumers, the confusion factor may outweigh the "wow, isn't that original!" factor.

European streaming service
Vivendi has been talking about aunching a pan-European streaming service for a while now. Their track record with OTT isn't great -- their German OTT service Watchever was just closed down at the end of 2016. And I'm not sure that German dramas are any more appealing to Dutch audiences than Hollywood dramas; I think there's no "European taste" in television. We'll have to see if it even ends up being launched, a lot of questions at the moment though the company remains keen.

Ariella - it's the name of the Deutsche Bank report, and I suspect they just wanted a name that stood out. I think launching a VoD service called Root Canal could face some hurdles...then again, it's got attitude, it's memorable -- you never know!

Re: Vivendi Pay TV
@Adi Side question: did they do any reasearch on the connotations of their name choice? Those of us who have had root canal don't exactly have warm, fuzzy feelings about the procedure and may not like a reminder in a brand name.
