Re: Device Interoperability
Hello, I am happy that you find the article and the VR Industry Forum goals to be beneficial.

When we talk today about content being available on a wide variety of platforms, this is typically due to a "lowest common denominator" effect - find the basic resolution or quality that will work on the widest possible set of devices. For highly immersive entertainment/media based content we need to shift this to a hogher level. We have seen that the industry guidelines for UHD, DASH and WebTV developed by the UltraHD Forum, DASH Industry Forum and HbbTV Association have been instrumental in establihing these technologies and the content associated with them. The aim is for the VR Industry Forum to di the same for this new format of media.

Easy Deployment
There are lots of technologies and standards bodies involved in between, and our goal is to try and reduce, simplify these so that interoperable services can be deployed relatively easily.

Ability to develop services that can be easily deployes is very important. I have witnessed significant challenges during deployment. And that is something significant to be considered as one of the key features.

Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
@JohnBarnes - thank you!  Fascinating!!  It makes sense that it originates with the creative side.  And that is what it takes to imagine and create something unknown - which is why we need both the arts and the sciences.

I learned something new!

Device Interoperability
But device interoperability is certainly a very important goal. We need to create content that can be viewed on the maximum number of devices with the fewest format challenges.

Very interesting goal. We already have ability to view content  on multiple devices. The point of interest here what would be new here and what exactly will be delivered as part of fewest format challenges. Surely something to stay tuned for...

Re: Virtual Reality Innovation is progressing
DHagar,

From Frederic Brown's story, "Preposterous." (Brown was the master of the short-short story, and an amazing writer then and too-forgotten writer now). I suppose I'm demonstrating my age; time was when most serious sci-fi readers would have recognized it at once.

The only copy of Brown's story I could find on line  is at http://www.documentsky.com/3203746765/

But metaphorically "to quirtle" is to perform an incomprehensible yet routine action as character in a story that is set so far from our own time and place that their ordinary life is incomprehensible to us. If you imagine trying to explain telecommuting, gaslighting, or web browsing to Augustus Caesar, those would all be quirtling to him.

@dcawrey:

...there are going to be so many companies getting into VR there's going to be a ton of options.

Absolutely...this is just the begining of VR era. As the momentum picks up we will see companies emerging into this area. Before we even realise there will be tons of choices..
