What did Asimov write about the caculator? His fictional tale of a reliance on calculators doesn't sound so far fetched these days. It's astonishing to me that people who make things are part novelty because they make things.

These are very good questions too, however unanswerable they may be.
What would Leonardo have done with a VR studio? How would Ben Franklin have interpreted entropy? What would CS Peirce have made of Autocorrect?

Michelle,

The trouble with "What would X think ..." when X=1 of a kind genius who wasn't understood in his/her own time is that we're never really going to understand what their thought processes were like. What would Leonardo have done with a VR studio? How would Ben Franklin have interpreted entropy? What would CS Peirce have made of Autocorrect?

The main thing that stands out to me is how much Turing seems to have reveled in both his existence as a pure mathematician and as a tinkerer.  This was a guy who could see very deep into how things work in a notebook or on a blackboard, but also seems to have loved getting in there with a screwdriver, an oil can, or a soldering gun. That's so foreign a combination to most of us that it makes it hard to imagine what he thought about while he was thinking up the things we do understand.

@John Interesting perspective -- I think you're right. What would Turing think of it all?

I have no actual on the ground research to support this ...
... but then neither does Telenor.  Here's a thought: the real change driving the expansion of chatbots is not that chatbots are getting better (though they are), but that humans are getting better at interacting with/using chatbots to get things done. It's another "reverse Turing Test" -- you can pass the Turing Test either by machines becoming more human, or people coming to understand machines better.

Re: Keeping AI ethical?
And I'm happy to note that in the Telenor Research report, they cite exactly the problem of uninterpretability, though I do think they're downplaying just how nervous it's really going to make people. We really don't want our AIs to act on hunches!  Or at least that's what my intiution tells me ...

Keeping AI ethical?
Something I'm currently working on an article about strikes me as relevant here. More and more, the complex decisions that AIs are making by learning to imitate human behavior are becoming uninterpretable -- that is, to make a decision complex enough to feel "human" to the human beings, a program has to stop being fully interpretable, i.e. you have to give up on the idea that it's going to articulate its particular set of rules.  The best chess playing bots now have individual styles which people can recognize and emulate, but there's no way to extract a set of "how to play chess like the bot" instructions.

I suspect this will be needed for AI ethics to seem truly ethical. Maybe the first really ethical AI will respond to the Trolley Problem as so many people do: "That's a stupid problem intended to make me feel foolish about my own moral nature!"

Re: Technology Trend 2017
Social media is becoming the new TV.

Just look at what is happening to Facebook. It's not going to be long before everything in the feeds is video. Just like television: A bunch of stuff on, but nothing to watch.
