Re: Virtualization and Orchestration
Ever So True @JohnBarnes--the challenge, though, is to whether folks will listen such common sense encouragement or not :)

Mpouraryan, And one such key principle is "Trust everyone but cut the cards" -- especially when dealing with tech folks.

Re: Virtualization and Orchestration
Whether one likes change or not, change occurs.   The question is whether we embrace it or simply wish it goes away.    We have to stay ahead of it--no doubt--while making sure that certain princip[les we take for granted is never forgotten.    Whether that balance is achieved (something I have noted in my deliberations here in TT) is the key challenge before us.

Very true. Technology is always changing and I think most people have come to grips with that, but how to maintain technology and keep it growing is another issues..

Re: Virtualization and Orchestration
Mpouraryan, Dcawrey,

I think you always have to consider it when people don't like change, but only part of what you have to consider is what they're saying, and a large part is why they're saying it. Working life is unfortunately full of people who have things for us to do that do not benefit us, and may not benefit the company, but definitely benefit the person proposing them.  Many such people work in IT, IS, or various other technical support organizations.

Re: Virtualization and Orchestration
Ariella, Mpouraryan,

If the singularity is really going to happen, I think it's already happening and will continue to happen for a while, possibly a long while. And I'm not sure you can be for or against a complete transformation that will create a population adapted to it (and leave us fossils behind); are you for or againt the Renaissance? or the Enlightenment? Those living on the other side would have to wish never to have existed (at least not in anything like the same form); those living on this side have to accept that almost all of its implications will come home to roost after we are dead (so maybe we don't get a vote?)

Excellent rules for monitoring and measurement, but I'd add one more
These are some pretty good rules --

As NVFs are added, moved, and de-commissioned, the monitoring points must also be created, moved, and retired at the same rate. Additionally, service assurance system should have a unified, end-to-end view of network topology (both physical and virtual) and operate in real time to detect issues and recommend solutions.

I would add one more:

As monitoring points are adjusted, a strong correspondence principle should be applied, i.e. meaning of data already collected should be comparable with meaning of data to be collected in the future. This may mean deliberately maintaining some indices that are primarily relevant to historical data. The added cost, however, will be well worth it if you can keep future analysts' options open, rather than trapping them in a "history kept resetting" context. Furthermore, if as is often the case there is a large amount of hidden corporate knowledge buried in the legacy system's structure or algorithms, it may help preserve its accessibility.

Re: Virtualization and Orchestration
Change is constant and I don't think anyone has any issues with it.   But what I have constantly underscored is the fact we as the most important players have to maintain our pulse and manage the transformation--Although I have been a fan of singularity for years, I am beginning to lean against it because of this very fact.
