Re: Metrics for demand and supply?
The text has qualitative measures such as the rapid expansion of SigFox as a measure of the unmet demand. Carriers can easily displace them if they wanted to given that their own facilities are being used to provide network coverage at the edge.

Metrics for demand and supply?
I'm just curious if there are any hard metrics for the demand and supply of distributed computing systems? Given how fast some computing services can be spun up, it's a bit surprising that there's much of a gap... unless it's a very large gap that requires large datacenters to be constructed?

There's a myth that AWS was created from Amazon's "excess" datacenter capacity, but that was never the case. Amazon built AWS because it anticipated the need for future capacity and wanted to scale computational supply in a way that could meet unexpectedly large demands.

I've always wondered what happens to out-dated datacenter hardware -- is it re-used for ever less demanding applications, or does it go straight to recycling centers..?

CORD - Great Design!
Great article and clarity about where the bottlenecks and demand is.

CORD sounds like a great design and a great potential opportunity for the right players to fill that space.  They can "control" a lot in the network by providing a hub, I would think.
