Telenor AI Lab
Finally a company is giving Facebook and Google competition. Now if all the other companies put their support behind Telenor or at least partner with them so they can be on the same level as Facebook and Google that would be great. Then they could one day surpass them.

Re: Leading leaders lead
@DHagar - I completely agree! Google and Facebook don't need to dominate all tech. It is really great to see Telenor trying to really step up their game and be a leader in this aspect. There is great potential with AI, and movies have been displaying this potential for decades (both good and bad.) But we all know fiction drives reality. We have to be able to dream it before we can do it.

@DHagar, @Michelle:

Training existing workforce to cater to organizational direction is an excellent approach. This is a better idea than bringing complete set of brand new force when you think of learning curve in terms of SME knoweledge with in the company, culture tec.

Re: Leading leaders lead
DHagar,

Besides claiming some badly needed public ground -- rather than just handing this whole huge new field over to THe Silicon Valley Billionaires Club as a private fief -- there's another benefit, the principle that tech historians call the Air Mail Paradigm, what nuclear power companies called Sustainable Base, and what NASA calls Anchor Tenancy.  For an industry to innovate, it needs a certain amount of slack -- surplus capacity supported by a guaranteed source of revenue, so that as the industry grows, there are always more skilled people and usable resources available to take advantage of new opportunities.

For the three examples I just mentioned, the early development of commercial air travel was supported by the Post Office guaranteeing payments to anyone who would fly a bag of mail where they needed it; many of the earliest airline companies survived and grew on air mail money long before passenger traffic was adequate (this became especially important in the Depression when travel became less affordable and much less frequent for the well-off market).

Sustainable Base was the basic idea that since nuclear power plants were more economical the bigger they were, what you wanted was an extremely electricity-hungry grown industry nearby (e.g. aluminum, heavy manufacturing, etc.) so many of the early reactors were sited near such places.

Anchor Tenancy is a matter of returns to scale -- rockets get cheaper if you build more of them, so you want a frequent regular buyer of space launches.  At one time military satellites were the only real anchor tenant; communications and to some extent weather satellites and earth resource satellites are now becoming anchor tenants as well.

What Telenor can establish is that there will always be jobs, skilled workers, tech advances, etc. in machine learning in Norway -- which means that the industry will always have a base there, and Norway gets to stay in the game.  For a small nation that historically has had to rely on a highly educated populace, that's a very smart investment!

Re: Leading leaders lead
@Mike, outstanding.  Telenor seems to truly understand and be creating a solid platform for transformation.

Fully agree with you on not turning the definitions over to the solely market-driven applications like Facebook and Google.  In my view it estblishes a minimal market to begin with - where Telenor can truly push the boundaries, which is need for AI.

Re: Leading leaders lead
@DHagar, thanks. I like that Telenor isn't willing to let the Google and Facebooks of the world dominate certain tech developments. This push for AI is really about giving Telenor a seat at the table, and pushing bounderies across Norway as well.

@Mike, great reporting and recognition - to keep us informed - of leading innovations and R&D!  I look forward to the extended interview.

The future will not just be applications, it will result from further learning and R&D.
