ONS: State of the Union for Open Source
I agree that this is a good [plan for the ONS to be more open than they were. So they should be a better company that should improve with the open source. This is also a good idea for the union that will open up a couple important changes with the system and how they will work threw it.

Re: Playing well with others...
Open source hardware projects probably won't get too out of hand like software projects. I'm sure there will be plenty of abandoned hardware projects (I know OpenSparc hasn't made much progress), but I doubt there will be as many as software projects.

Re: Playing well with others...
54 million projects does sound like a lot, but many of them are probably dormant.

Most people don't look at Github like Google. They use the code and projects that are useful to them. They don't think about the vastness, trying to search around for things.

Re: Playing well with others...
The Devil's advocate apparently doesn't live in the real world where the "free" market isn't really free (as in a meritocracy). How about those set top boxes that play well with others that we were supposed to get? The FCC had rules for set top boxes that would have created a somewhat free market.... hmm what happened to them?

Just playing Devil's advocate here, but wouldn't a free market eventually push out vendors who don't play well with others?

Playing well with others...
> "software-defined standards were crucial because they bring plug-and-play capabilities, as well as provide interoperability..."

The problem of achieving interoperability is that sometimes the hardware vendors actively don't want their products to play well with competitor's equipment. It's a "race to the bottom" for hardware manufacturers if they can't offer anything different. So there's a balance to strike with making things standard, but not *too standard* for hardware-makers.

ONS Open Source
They should harmonize to keep things together for Open Source so you can be prepared for any changes etc.
