Re: Video.....
@elizabethv I'm thinking it is a little bit of everything.

I would agree, a lot of the stuff on YouTube is really mindless. Why would that stuff be interesting? Whatever the reason, it's done well. It's certainly not going to go away anytime soon.

@mhhf1ve - I think YouTube could allow for "sectioning" their videos, such as tutorials and animation, without dividing their brand. They could add sections to the top of the page much in the same way that Facebook does. I think this would allow people to narrow down their search results before they ever type anything in the box.

Video.....
I'm curious about the kinds of videos they are watching. Are they like the Live Videos feature on Facebook that they're watching, or are they watching the surprise egg videos my 4-year-old is addicted to? The latter would concern me more. At least with the "Live" videos, or even a "Snapchat" type situation, they are still communicating with other people. I fear for our future if they are just watching mindless YouTube shorts of people skateboarding off the roof of their house and into their pools....

I hear you -- it does seem like Skype is a longshot for turning itself around. But I wouldn't necessarily say it's dead yet, simply because it could still be forced upon people like Bing. Bing isn't exactly dead. Perhaps Cortana will integrate with and make Skype better someday?

@mhhf1ve Skype does not have a shot.

It already has had its chance. And now it's been eclipsed by other platforms. Slack, WeChat, Telehgram - all of these are superior to Skype at this point.

mhhf1ve - It's integrated with Outlook, so like a lot of MSFT products, just gets in the door as a default option at many organizations.

Re: Online Video Tops Messaging
I think Skype still has a shot... Microsoft just needs to integrate it better with Xbox and then it'll have access to a younger generations of gamers. But then I guess if they're trying to expand Skype's enterprise appeal -- that wouldn't be a great idea to flood the userbase with adolescents.

But then, I'm not sure why Skype is such a great service for the enterprise market? Unless it can be re-made into a Slack competitor of sorts?

mhhf1ve - I think Skype is pretty much focused on the enterprise market now. It has an established consumer base, but I suspect that is declining as snapchat, whatsapp and facetime become more mainstream. And I think we'll see more from FB as well.  Google hangouts is interesting -- could android penetration drive it? It's not an app I have looked at.

Re: Online Video Tops Messaging
mhhf1ve - That's a tricky balance to find - launching different services aimed at different audiences, different strategies but still being able to differentiate them enough. I agree, there's a real danger of consumer confusion there.

Re: Online Video Tops Messaging
Well, YouTube is already splitting into paid and ad-based. So there's YouTube Red, YouTube kids, and regular YouTube now. I would think it might be a branding error to further split the YouTube brand much more. That might create confusion among users over what they're getting. I suspect that if google wants to experiment with different streaming video apps, maybe they'll launch completely different apps without YouTube branding so they can succeed or fail on their own merits. Just like Allo and all the other message apps that google is floating now.
