Board games? Haha, I don't really know. TV has become so important to American culture it is hard to imagine life without it.

Good observation!  Although I feel like that doesn't solve the "mission" of the living room, meaning there's no collective verb happening there.  With the TV as the focal point, you're "doing" something together - watching TV and having the same joint experience.  

"Sitting" doesn't have the same cache, I think.  It could be "talking" to each other, but we all know that's not the reality of it!

This is a great question that I have seen tackled time to time by design shows. Many times they will use a fireplace, other times they will put furniture on the outside of the room with something else as a focal point in the center of a room.

This is a sincere question: If you do not have a TV hooked up to cable, what is the center of people's living rooms?  Before TV, people would gather around the radio, right?  With no TV, where do families all sit together and share the same experience?  We know it's not the dining room having dinner together...

If providers are able to offer great new services like 4K and VR there will always be a market for pay TV. 

There's really only so far OTT services can go right now - servicing the needs of high end customers doesn't seem to be a focus for them (for now).

afwriter - I'll dig around for something, but at least in the US, seasonality is quite pronounced in pay-TV. As you mentioned, Q2 is notoriously difficult for pay-TV subscribers, as people cancel subscriptions in June. And then Q3 is usually quite good, as people re-connect in September.

afwriter - I think they are all watching warily, but each country has it's own individual industry structure. The US is quite unique in many ways, so while there are lessons to be learned, the US experience is unlikely to be exactly replicated. Pay tv penetration is lower in most countries anyway, with more free to air broadcast usage. And US content -- while interesting -- isn't quite as significant. Local content production isn't always easy...so everywhere is a bit different.
