@Ariella, well you raise an excellent point. No matter what, there WILL be a reduction in total jobs at the entry level - while shifting to an increase of higher-level jobs - not only as a result of automation but in competition with the lower cost services that can be provided by developing countries.
But this is where we have to transform our cultures and expectations that we can operate the way we always have and still succeed. We have to change and deelop all workers for the new skill sets.

@Ariella, I believe that is the missing link. I believe we are already behind in that role.
People today need "different" as well as more developed advanced skill sets. Unless we build those capabilities and provide the training opportunities people and their skills will become increasingly obsolete.

@DHagar yes, though I think that we have to start planning for that early on with a curriculum that enables people to do more advanced jobs.

They say that having AI can be useful for big virus attacks etc. I agree that it can do many things and be more valuable as time goes on.

@Ariella, I saw that movie as well!
I fully agree - the future is jobs WITH technology. I see technology as augmenting the human capabilities and intelligence - rather than replacing it. Humans, if designed properly, can move up the food chain and create more meaningful jobs that some of the mind-numbing tasks we give them to do.

This reminds me of the movie Desk Set, which posited a computer that can find answers for you nearly half a century before the emergence of Google. Much of the plot centered on the women whose job was to answer the questions that people phoned worrying that they would be fired because the computer made them redunant. The computer, however, could not answer phone calls and needed someone to enter the query. So their jobs were safe, at least for a while.
