Thank you, Delphine.

@kelsey, fault isolation is a smart grid service. A number of utilities use it now, or plan to soon. For the most part, it's been siloed using private networks, mostly licenced radios.

Silver

Thank you Kelsey and thank you to all our Listeners today.

Questions on smart grid are not on the scope of our smart territories expertise (more focused on City services than Utilites one). But there will always be redundancy on security layers.

@Delphine Thanks so much for an excellent radio show today and for sticking around to answer our additional questions! @Listeners thanks for tuning in and for your questions, we'll see you next time at On-the-Air Thursday and I hope to meet some of you at BCE next week! https://tmt.knect365.com/big-communications-event/

@klogan in what ways?

power management is the largest benefit

nteresting to know

Electric utilities security practices aim for "air gaps" to protect the most critical assets -- generators, transmission substations, control centers. In a smart city, would that continue, or would active security measures be considered an accpetable substitute?

Silver

smart is much less secure

Steel

@Delphine in regard to the smart grid, are fault isolation devices currently in use in smart cities?

Author

No, it depends on the application. But you're right there are specific private networks for Transportation or Electricity distribution. Same in Europe.

Hi everyone, don't forget to post your questions to Delphine to the chat!

Author

@Delphine, here's a listener question for you: At least in North America, electric utilities have always had a strong bias toward avoiding the public networks whenever possible, or at most using closed, transport only services like Frame Relay and T1/E1.  Is that market perception changing?

Author

Thank you Delphine!

Platinum

Are there any smart cities that Delphine stand out as a great examples of doing things right? If so, what cities and why?

Platinum

2nd Poll: power manager

Steel

2nd Poll Question answer: Infrastructure, in general. That includes electric power, traffic, gas, water, sewage, public buildings.

Silver

I would say Emergency services and power management

Silver

QUESTION: I'd like to know what security threats Delphine sees as the most serious and what service providers should be doing to reduce threats.

Platinum

As Liz said, don't forget to post your questions for Delphine here!

Author

2nd poll question for you, listeners!

As a smart city emerges, which aspect of the infrastructure benefits most from advanced networks? Transportation, power management, academics, emergency services, or something else?

Author

Poll question answer: About the same. Different vulnerabilities, but more or less the same level of threat.

Silver

Delphine will be taking your questions live on the air, so if you have questions, now is the time to post them

Platinum

Yes, utility grids, regaless of deployment scenario will be susecptible to security threats. In the case of smart cities susceptibility is more.

Steel

Poll question answer: based on recent reports I've read on IoT security, I'd say yes

Platinum

@duh sorry that was a typo, there aren't additional materials

Author

"Special Education Materials" link does not appear on the web page. Please post a link to the slides.

Silver

Listener poll question, respond in the chat!

Are the utility grids in smart cities more susceptible to security threats than in "traditional" cities?
