Exactly! And the more they learn about it, the less nervous and more focused they can be.

Re: Simplicity
@vnewman Exactly. It's when you've run out of options and if you don't make changes, your business will become obsolete.

Re: Simplicity
srufolo1,

Education is the key as long as the fear is irrational.

If the fear is reasonable, education may very well prevent going down that road at all -- as perhaps well it should.

Re: Simplicity
@JohnBarnes - when do you change?  I think it's when you lose the ability to choose i.e. the choice is made for you by an option being limited or removed - which I think will eventually be the case with the cloud.

Re: Simplicity
@JohnBarnes Great analogy to tie everything in perspective once again! At 16, when I was learning to drive a car (automatic Ford Maverick), with my sister teaching me in the passenger's seat, I wound up on someone's lawn. I didn't understand the concept of steering the wheel. Then a few years later when I tried to learn to drive a Ford Pinto with a manual transmission in the hilly Pennsylvania countryside, I started to roll down the hill struggling to get it into first after stopping at a Stop sign. That exhibits no control over either situation. Hopefully companies that migrate to the cloud understand that they are not losing control over anything really.

I think a big part of being unsure and scared about the Cloud is not fully understanding it.

Re: Simplicity
vnewman,

Or more ambiguously, like an automatic versus a manual transmission. At one time a mediocre manual driver could still beat even a pretty good automatic on fuel economy and other performance indexes.  Nowadays it takes a really good driver to stay even with the latest automatics, and there are still some situations where a manual is better. So when should someone change over from manual to automatic? Depends on driver and circumstances ... but as a general rule, most people don't change at the optimal time.

Eventually it will all be cloud except for some high-security and other very peculiar cases. When to change? That's why we pay C-level officers a lot of money (and may or may not tell them anything).

I think those local servers provide some people with that proverbial illusion of control - much like driving a car when the stats say flying is much safer.

Re: Simplicity
@JohnBarnes As the generation of folks who need to see things goes away, so will the local servers. I feel that every enterprise by now should conduct at least some aspects of their business in the cloud.
