Re: It's about time
Haha definitely! It's better than a lot of the things you're seeing in videos these days...

Re: It's about time
Given our current collective state of mind, maybe cat videos aren't the worst option for idle time.

Re: What about Video?
@Adi - That makes a lot of sense that Netflix dominates fixed-line traffic while YouTube dominates mobile networks. Especially now that you can download videos from Netflix. I think the ability to download videos is really a game changer for Netflix and any streaming service in general. It allows people to watch things when they can't watch any other way. Right now I'm watching "Catastrophe" from Amazon after having downloaded it earlier while I was at home. I can't download anything from Hulu, which I hate, because it doesn't offer the option. Here at work, Hulu can't be watched because it's blocked content, for whatever reason.

Re: It's about time
@dmendyk - There may be people using their free time in mass transit to watch videos of cats, but I'm sure their personal growth would appreciate them spending more time reading real literature. In that respect, I would say mobile growth could stand to decrease a bit. People used to read books on mass transit, that's an art that should have never disappeared.

Re: Mobile Media Growth to Slow
Could it really continue at this torrid pace? I think not.

There's really only so much media available for mobile devices. Yes, I get that more is being made, but I think the growth has to fade as the gimmick is no longer.

Mobile Media Growth to Slow
I think mobile media consumption via the Internet would be booming. The survey spans 71 countries, so it may include the different viewing habits of other countries, which maybe do not view media on the Internet as much as Americans do.

Re: It's about time
To that point, users of mass transit have hours of idle time each week that can be devoted to Facebook updates and cat videos. But they've been doing that for a few years now, so that growth probably is largely accounted for already.

Re: It's about time
dmendyk - Yes, i think mobile devices have been able to essentially "create" more time in the day for connected activities by allowing web and app access when none used to be available. But there are finite limits to the number of hours in a day, even for the highly gifted multitasker zombie.

Re: What about Video?
afwriter - It's a good question. You would think video consumption will drive longer engagement, and it is due to grow on mobile devices. A possible explanation could be that video will replace fairly long engagement activities on social media - so people will switch from seeing images and texts to video messages but not necessarily increase time spent substantially. And I think we'll see mostly shorter form videos rather than 60-minute dramas viewed on smartphones. Certainly traffic data is different on mobile and fixed-line networks. Netflix, for example, dominates downstream fixed-line traffic in the US, while YouTube is responsible for far more traffic than Netflix on mobile networks. Plus, the study isn't saying growth will stop - just won't be at the pace we have been seeing.

Re: What about Video?
@vnewman - What you're saying makes a lot of sense. Personally, I'm a little taken aback by Facebook Live and the insane videos of murders and people dying while others watch and don't report it. It's taking the world in a direction I certainly don't care for. Especially as a mother. I wouldn't mind at all if they just did away with Facebook Live. And really, I think social media in general is just at a standstill. I mean it's fine, but I don't see anything spurring me to use it more than I already do. If anything, I'm pulling away.
