Re: UHD Coming
I'm not sure why VR would need a "theatre"..? I guess if it required the user to walk around in order to "move" in the virtual environment.. but then traditional theatres probably won't be good places for that without removing all the movie theatre seating.

I hope AR/VR gets a lot better, but so far, I've gotten a bit nauseated when I've tried it.

Re: UHD Coming
I don't think 3D movies are going anywhere. Plenty of people seem to like them (but not me because I wear prescription glasses and "6 eyes" is not a great way to experience a movie).

I don't think the 3D experience is *that* much more engaging than a regular movie, but maybe I just haven't seen enough 3D movies. I saw Avatar. And I can't even remember if I've seen any other 3D movies after that.

Re: UHD Coming
Netflix doesn't advertise its DVD service much anymore, and after the whole Quickster (sic) fiasco, I think they just gave up on trying to split it off.

http://gizmodo.com/5897867/qwikster-is-a-terrible-name-so-netflix-bought-dvdcom

I just googled and found out that Netflix still has about 4 million customers paying for its DVD by mail service. That's more than AOL's ~2 million dialup subscribers that still exist somewhere, but it's less than the total ~9 million dialup subscribers across the US.

Re: UHD Coming
@mhhf1ve - I never even thought about Netflix having their DVD service still, but you're right they do. There was a movie I wanted to watch a few weeks ago that was only available on DVD, and I don't subscribe to that. Even my grandparents only use the streaming side of Netflix. Honestly, the only reason I'm reluctant to be completely sold on the use streaming is that it's hard to amass a "library" that way.

Re: UHD Coming
@Adi - Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing 3D take a hike in movie theaters. I've never really enjoyed watching anything 3D. It gives me a headache. I'd be interested to see if VR does the same thing. I'm also not a big fan of paying extra for 3D movies, but if and when they have a VR movie, I'll definitely at least give them a try.

Thanks, Adi..

When will SD DVDs completely stop being made? Netflix's DVDs by mail service is still going, but for how much longer?

I wonder if some future VR goggles will be backwards compatible with 3D TV formats -- so that people won't have to fire up their ancient 3D TVs to watch Avatar again....

Re: UHD Coming
mhhf1ve  - It's a dirty word at TV-related conferences now. You can't mention it. It really didn't take off, but there's probably people who enjoy it -- kind of a cult thing -- who are still buying the glasses. It's been more successful in theatres, for movies. But even that will probably be replaced by VR in time.

Re: UHD Coming
mhhf1ve - Interesting question. Will keep an eye out to see if I can get any data on that. Today I would guess it's more about ABR profiles -- so the lowest profile, probably less than 1 Mbit/s would qualify as "SD" and the highest would be "HD." So it's more about network congestion, and the player dynamically switching between profiles based on available bandwidth, than about people choosing to watch a lower resolution. I wonder if there's a business model there anymore.

Re: UHD Coming
@mhhf1ve - I actually purchased some 3D glasses for friends of mine about a year ago. And a fancy case to keep them in. Though I know they rarely ever watch their 3D programming. But if the venture was profitable, I would think they would have made additional content to match the demand. Given that there isn't content, that must mean it just isn't in demand.
