Re: IOT has many paths
afwriter,

Bingo. The old "it's cheaper to have one big complex unit and just replace it" scam, now applied to streetlighting (and the taxpayer wallet).  See also "No user serviceable parts inside" (because if you try to just fix what's wrong, we'll burn, poison, or shock you for trying to keep us from getting your money!)

Re: IOT has many paths
With how fast technology moves now it is nearly impossible for anything not to become obsolete in 10 years.

Re: IOT has many paths
My only worry there is that one broken component would affect the whole system versus just that component if it was separate.

I wonder how many wireless devices can be touchless for 10+ years and still function properly -- and avoid being obsolete, too.

Re: IOT has many paths
<We've taken what would normally be four or five devices that hang off of a pole and we've consolidated them to one unit. So there's one touch, one installation needed, and one maintenance call if one is ever needed to manage that piece of digital infrastructure.<

That sounds like a big improvement in terms of streamlining and efficiency. It should also look neater.

Re: AT&T's IoT Evolution
Excellent interview and description of how to make IoT work and deliver new value.

I like his concept of multiple platforms with the emphasis on solving their problems - that is where the value and growth will develop.

Cities make an excellent environment in which to showcase a network of IoT and device connections.  Cities serve as hosts for public value, prublic/private partnerships.  Maybe Smart Cities will be an entirely new role for Cities that can help them re-invent themselves?
