Re: Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
@freehe Guess that's the downside to long-term contracts. It's not easy to keep up with when, how and what the companies are billing their customers for. It's easy for them to cheat. But who would want to do business with a company that has no integrity?

@dcawrey  interestion observation I could not agree more but I also think in some cases it will act as a game changer for improving many apps performance at the end...

Multi cloud is important because not every application is made equal.

You're going to want to run a complex cloud application from Adobe somewhere close versus something less latent like email. It's just an issue of data over geography.

@Joe, Great article. I didn't see anything in the article mentioning security meaures for multi-cloud. I am sure they have some security measures in place but just curious to know what they are using - encryption, etc.

Re: Cloud Foundry on Open Source Multi-Cloud
@clrmoney. It is great that many companies are moving towards offering cloud servcies and SW-WAN. This helps level the playing field for competitors and helps drive down the prices for residential and commercial customers.

Re: Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
@srufolo1, I agree. But I think companies are smarter now and don't get locked into long-term contracts like that anyone. I worked in Asset management and contracting. It is amazing how much money companies spend on SW&HW and maintenance costs. At one company I worked when I performed asset management and tracked all of the contracts in a database, there were at least 10 companies that will billing us for services we no longer used. There were at least another 5 that were double-billing us. They were other companies where our maintenance has expired and we were being charged a higher price.

Public Cloud
I agree with Davis on public cloud for certain industries such as financial services and healthcare. They are too many risks involved with moving to a public cloud and too many additional security measures that must be in place for it to work. I know they eventually these industries will move to a public cloud but I hope it will be a long time from now.

Read the book "Dragnet Nation" to learn about how lax privacy measures are and how much consumer information is so easily accessible. Even if you are not concerned it is great to be aware.

Re: Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
Vendors may not be gettting the 30 years contracts, but they are digging in their heels on working with open source. they offer a lower price if a carrier buys the whole package instead of just one piece. Carriers want the one piece (VNFs) to work across different networks and vendors.

Re: Standardization and coordination to prevent lock-in
I think the whole world of technology was different back in the 90s though than it is today. And good gravy do I feel old thinking about how 30 year contracts signed in the 90s are coming to a close. Maybe it was just my age in the 90s, but it didn't seem like technology was as ever-evolving back then like it is now. Obviously it did evolve, but today it seems like you literally just can't keep up. It isn't possible. The minute you buy a Samsung Galaxy S7 they're rolling out the 8 and your phone is "dated." The we settled into 4G and talk of 5G was on its way. It doesn't make sense to agree to something like a 30 year contract for anything technology related today. But in the 90s, settling in with Oracle was just something a lot of businesses did.

@afwriter  Ha ha. Good point. With a mortgage you're stuck with the same bank. No you're not. Your mortgage will get sold to a million different "servicers" along the way. In any event, it's a long haul!
