Re: 360 Degree Video
afwriter - Getting very mixed reports on the motion sickness. Some people swear people can't handle it for more than a few minutes at a time, while others swear equally energetically that it's to do with latency -- as long as the field of view moves when you move your head, and there's no latency in the updating of the image, there's no motion sickness. Its hard to tell, because you are seeing a variety of bit-rates, resolutions and overall quality of experience involved with different trials. The longest VR experience I have had was about 8-10 minutes, and I was fine -- no sickness, nausea, headaches etc.  But I was seated, and that might make a difference.

Re: Who wants this..?
@Mhhf1ve I agree completely, but I wonder - much like with other technologies - if it is not a field of dreams scenario. You have to build it and prove a track record of content before people will come to it. Still, it may be a rocky start if people do come to it only to find that they don't like the experience, then you have to win them back further down the road.

Re: 360 Degree Video
You would think it would make you sick too. I know it is having that effect on some people already and to watch a match for 1, 2, 3 hours I would assume the number of people getting sick from VR would rise significantly.

Re: 360 Degree Video
The headgear just to watch a rugby game in 360-degree coverage does not appeal to me either. I think PCCW was definitely thinking outside the box, though, and is onto something that is going to really take off.

Re: 360 Degree Video
I know that Apple has been working on some kind of AR/VR apparatus. Maybe they can make the experience better for users. Quite frankly, wearing a bunch of gear on your head sounds painful for the neck.

Re: 360 Degree Video
dcawrey, mhh1ve - I think the headset is a challenge. There's going to be a lot of people just unwilling to wear it, specially in warmer climates. But they will get lighter and cheaper, so hopefully people will start to use them more. Of course, there are other issues as well, including bandwidth and motion sickness. There's a ways to go with VR as a TV solution. But for gaming, for training, for a range of other areas outside of TV, I think it's probably going to move faster.

Re: 360 Degree Video
I wonder, though, if the 360 video data that's being collected now -- can be re-used for other purposes. For example, will the 360 video data be incorporated into more realistic video games?

Who wants this..?
> "Given that VR is new, people are not used to it. And headsets are heavy, people just haven't got that used to it.."

I understand VR is going to be huge someday, but right now, it looks like it's in the "trough of disappointment" due to the uncomfortable headgear and lack of quality content. I'm sure it'll get better, but right now.... I can't say that I'm impressed.

Re: 360 Degree Video
That's cutting it close in terms of approval time!

I'm also skeptical of sports and VR. As a sport enthusiast, I want to be able to relax while watching games. I don't want a device planted on my face!

360 Degree Video
360 degree video has a lot to offer as it is used at many events in many countries. I like how you can use 360 video at certain angles etc. They have it it tables camera etc. People use it so it much be very valuable.
