It will, as these things always are, a case by case rollout. To me, it's of little surprise that, as of this writing, this is the fourth-place option. The functional model of NFV is a tad controversial. Tom Nolle, for example, sees it as simply being a replacement of the physical with the virtual. (Light Reading link) Of course, many virtualization/NFV proponents would tend to argue that that's the point, but there may be some agility benefits being missed here if not enough innovation is happening. I'm not so sure we're THAT far off on the automation (although definitely so, IMHO, with true, generalized AI, as well as the true self-organizing network (SON)), as indicators suggest that it's already here to a certain degree. The effects of big data and AI on the network won't happen for quite some time.... just my two cents.
