Re: CenturyLink on NFV
Mike's reference to "balance" points at the critical thing, I think. Those who can ride the wave should ride it but those who are too heavy or un-agile to swim should wait for the boat.

One more demonstration of my favorite adage that for every proverb there is an equal and opposite converb.

...one has to always be ready to improvise, adapt and be willing to be open to change always--again another implicit objective of being "transformational"--that's the key takeaway I tooka as I enjoyed all the discourse on this vital subject @MIKE presented for us to ponder

It is smart business strategy--there is no need to reinvent the wheel--but to build upon the success-at the heart of transformation always.

It's always a balance between serving the millions of current customers while also implementing virtualization technologies. The fast that CL is on its third version of SDN/NFV says a lot to me.

Re: CenturyLink on NFV
@JohnBarnes, well that is a good point.  I agree.  If you do not have the knowledge and expertise inhouse, learning off someone else's deployment can provide a good starting point.  There truly is security in the "deliverables" as opposed to the "ponderables"!

@dcawrey, I agree because there is only so much you can anticipate, you truly do not know the impact until you implement.

srufolo1 , dcawrey,

Contrariwise, it's also a good guide for potential hang-backers and late-adapters; if in your industry you really can't afford a service interruption (e.g. travel reservations) or margins are too narrow to support throwing away recently aquired physical capital (e.g. supermarkets), then the current state of NFV (things rolling over way before the useful life or depreciation of the acquired gear) tells you: Let other people make the mistakes first. Wait till there is a manual and it's not coming out in a new edition every ten days.

@srufolo1 When it comes to technology, things change quickly. This is why I think it is better to just jump in at this point.

It's a great way to get over "paralysis by analysis" that keeps so many from taking action
