Re: Foresight-Understanding-Automation
DCawrey,

Short answer: YES (to both sides of your "or." But ultimately what the box needs to do is be whatever you need it to be -- where it is and without having to send a truck to it -- and that means that what the containers can contain keeps getting to be more diverse. And when every container can contain anything (including other containers ...), that's pretty much the limit of convergence.

Re: Foresight-Understanding-Automation
@dcawrey, true it is a developing process.  When I say containers, I mean any module that will apply chips and edge computing, so I believe you have to include them now and then develop the effective platform over time.

This is the chasim that has to be crossed in order to have a true platform architecture in the future.

Re: Foresight-Understanding-Automation
I can see how they might converge in the future, I guess I'm just wondering about right now.

For security reasons, should VMs be lumped in as containers? Or is this a work in progress?

Re: Foresight-Understanding-Automation
@dcawrey, great question.  I believe the answer is both - it is automating the process of the container itself, but becoming its own edge data source of information that is converging into networks and platforms as well.  What do you think?

Re: Foresight-Understanding-Automation
A VM could be a container. But I thought the whole point of containers was to take away some of the more OS-like functions that VMs provide? Or is this world converging?

Re: Foresight-Understanding-Automation
@clrmoney, excellent points.  That, I believe, is one of the failures or areas we have not been as successful in.  I do not believe that we have a widespread understanding of technology to put into context new and better ways to function with automation.  We truly need to develop that to better get value from the automation as well as the employees.

I know automation has a lot to offer and them being with NFV/Network Functions Virtualization will add more things and make it easier in a way when you are handling something complex. I think that you should know how to use it so you can be successful.
