Re: Demand or Supply or Both?
Very well explained.

I am interetsed and curious to see how things would play for NFV in both short and longer terms.

It's going to cost money to go virtual. And all of the things that come along with it. IT departments are very aware of this issue. It's going to be a money loser for a long time until efficiency gains can be had.

Re: Demand or Supply or Both?
Even a fad is in demand. What's important here is how the supply develops. If the demand proves too difficult to meet, the supply will not be able to meet it, by simple corolation.

How well the demand can be met will affect supply, which in turn affects demand. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out for NFV in the near future.

I am totally with you about virtualization tools be in demand even in their not very matured state. I get your additional insight.

Re: Demand or Supply or Both?
Ms. Akkineni,

So, turning back to the original topic, I think we're in a phase here where virtualization spending is going to go up and up and up for a few years because for a while, virtualization tools, even not very good ones, will be so important even to stay in the game. Of course a shrewd business planner would be taking your advice now -- so that when comparison shopping becomes possible again, they have products and services that can win hte comparison. The time to follow make plans to follow good advice is before it's true!

Completely understand if we have to deal with competion. You just hav eto go with it when you know that new product is going to help you compete.

Re: Demand or Supply or Both?
Ms. Akkennini,

There's nothing irrational about rushing in to buy a product right away if you're in the middle of a competition, and the product is essential to remaining competitive.  If all the winners have and rely on widgets, and all the widget-less are going broke, then if the only widget you can get is an overpriced tenth-rate widget, you buy it the second it's available and wish you could have paid more for it sooner.

'You don't go to war with what you would like, you go to war with what you have." As competition approaches war (i.e. anything to survive), like becomes less relevant and have becomes all that matters. And it's clear the storm of virtualization is going to be survival struggle for a large number of firms.

@John.B:

Very well explained analogy. Agree that there is more and better products getting out there. But i don't believe people are just jumping in to buy a product right away. Unless it is something like iPhone8 folks these days are taking time to do their leg work and take time to make that call.

Demand or Supply or Both?
There's a tendency with a new technical area to think that spending increases reflect changes in current demand -- and with a mature, narrow product, they do.  But for a new technology, besides reflecting the decision of customers to buy more, a rise in spending can also reflect:

1) There's more to buy (demand was pent up and supply is just coming on line)

2) There's better stuff to buy (better products, which must now recover their R&D costs, are coming on line, and as customers upgrade, or enter the ladder on a higher rung, or both, they buy things that cost more than they did last year).

My guess is that all three -- simple demand, pent up demand, and technical improvement --- are in play right now. It would be interesting to see someone try to estimate how much of each.

Spending on Virtualization
I think that this will be handled well because there is a lot of money out there to promote whatever product or service it has to offer.  I know things will increase as times goes on.
