Re: Digital Transformation
@JohnBarnes, you are my nominee for the job!  It would certainly keep things focused and move us a long way towards producing truly valuable returns.

And that’s the most important part! To be able to work out a system where good quality products can be sent out as quickly as possible for the consumers.

Re: Digital Transformation
DHagar,

Famously, one of the team that won the "race for the laser" predicted in the early 60s that there would be at least one laser in almost every American home by 2000, but said he didn't know what it would be used in.  (As it turned out, it replaced the phonograph needle.)

I think the real reason I like the idea of a "usefulness engineer" is that the job would be so much fun. "Here's six new things, figure out how to use at least three of them to do something fun and/or beneficial at once."  Like Chopped for technology.

Re: Digital Transformation
@JohnBarnes, I like that term!  You are absolutely correct, it is expanding the usefulness to the customer as well as the designed delivery.  And the increasing numbers of variables are actually creating additional combinations of value and hybrids.

A Wholesale Service Provider's View
This was a good interview with Epsilon, which seems to be taking digital transformation to a new level to provide quality service in the quickest and most efficient way it can. It's all about elimination of old processes, as he said, so they can offer customers a different way to "buy and consume" its services.

Re: Digital Transformation
DHagar, or it is just the return of the good old educative function of good marketing. With genuine innovation comes the need to explain what the devil it does. (Hence so many early names for products like horseless carriage and wireless telegraph). In some ways I’m surprised there aren’t specialized “usefulness engineers” already.

Re: Digital Transformation
@JohnBarnes, well true!  If they don't know what they know, that will not benefit them.  "Quality" is solving the customer's problems, so it may go unrecognized and therefore under valued?

Re: Digital Transformation
Interesting too that we usually think of "transparency" as "the user doesn't know how it happens, they just see that it does happen" -- and here's a voice for "if the user doesn't see it they'll never know they want it."

Re: Digital Transformation
@Mike, I like his business view of how to add value and drive the transformation.  I believe that is key to gaining support from senior executives and support from non-technical managers and decision makers to embrace and pursue the full value from transforming to the digital economy.

I believe it is the applications that will attract and convince business users to participate and further drive the transformation; when they change their decision making and get new and better results.
