Re: The Train is Picking up Speed
7% is a static number. That 7% could end up being the last to take up the trend a little later down the road.

Re: The Train is Picking up Speed
Interesting! IBM has a solution for mainframes too. I'm glad to learn something new today about our old buddies, mainframes. What about all those systems still running very old code? Do you think z/OS is for them too or just new machines?

Re: The Train is Picking up Speed
Michelle,

IBM is still making new mainframes and there are still uses for which they are preferred.

https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/zosbasics/com.ibm.zos.zmainframe/zconc_whousesmf.htm

"Dinosaurs" is a great metaphor. At one time we thought they were extinct; now we realize that we eat their descendants at KFC, for Thanksgiving, and au vin. They're just not doing the same things anymore.  But be honest -- if you're not Fred Flintstone, would you rather have a brontoburger or a turkeyburger?

Similarly a mainframe that is part of a large network still contributes and is still desirable (maybe even more so since more people can access it via the cloud).

Re: The Train is Picking up Speed
Speaking of legacy systems...how are we doing with digital transformation of old mainframes? I'm really curious about these dinos.

A lot of this transformaton starts with moving off of legacy systems and onto the cloud. Companies like SAP have been vendors doing this for a long time. Now they are working with Microsoft and Azure to take that to the next level.

Re: Digital Fractures
Agreed! I also think it’s important to keep a good customer/company relationship. It’s important to, not only have good communication, but to show your customer that the company continues to evolve.

That's 7% of companies surveyed. Consider those that didn't participate...

Digital Fractures
There will always be some issues that need to be resolved in order to make things better when it comes to digital world whcih almost everything we do is online today but it is the customer that we should provide the great customer serrive in order to keep them coming back for more. The Train is Picking up Speed
I can't believe that there are still 7% of companies with no strategy, especially as digital transformation is a hot trend. I would liken it to a train that is picking up steam, as time marches on digital adoption is getting faster and faster and if these companies don't make it to the platform in time they are going to completely miss the train.

Is no strategy really worse than flawed strategy?
A company with no strategy is likely to get dragged around and end up doing what everyone else does -- but at least that will be something that is working out in the market, as a general rule.  A company with a flawed strategy is going to be actively moving in the wrong direction.

I suppose I'm echoing the White Rabbit ("Don't just do something, stand there!" or perhaps seeing the advantages, from a frog's viewpoint, of King Log over King Stork, but it does seem to me that that's a bit of conventional wisdom that deserves challenge. Maybe in a time of very rapid change, waiting a bit and following the crowd is better than going hard after a course of action that you have to choose in a state of near-total ignorance.  So maybe the best course is, as Gandhi said, "Look after the means and the ends will look after themselves."
