Facebook & Amazon are already weirding me out with their targeted ads based on my offline activities. I’m not really looking forward to the (probably not-so-distant) future where even more data points are readily accessible!

Re: The Cost of Smart Cities
I wonder if local businesses chip in money at all. That seems to be a strategy for community improvements in San Diego. Businesses seem to recognize that things like cleaner sidewalks, more parking, bike racks, etc. make neighborhoods more attractive and therefore easier to attract customers, so chip in to offset the cost of some of the local initiatives to make areas more desirable. (On a larger scale, does Starbucks still partner with AT&T to offer their customers WiFi? I wonder if some of these programs piggyback off of things like that)

@afwriter: Indeed, government contracts are where the big bucks are!

Plus, there's all of that juicy, juicy user data to collect through new sources.

I agree. I think it’ll be interesting to see what comes of it. I’m also excited to see the new development in smart cities and how fast they’ll grow.

Re: The Cost of Smart Cities
@afwriter AT&T obviously hopes to more than recoup its investment of billions, but that doesn't mean that every little pilot program itself will return a profit for the company. Many companies engage in programs to help the underserved for the goodwill they reap. For example, when Whirlpool donated washers and dryers to schools for its Whirlpool Cares Program, it didn't expect to make money off it directly, though it might get some tax benefits But it does refer to its good works in its marketing, and it's possible that people who read about would be more inclined to buying their products because of it.

@Ariella, AT&T isn't doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. That investment has to be recouped somehow.

Re: Smart Cities
Smart cities definitely are changing and evolving into a big thing. It’s only a matter of time before more and more cities are transforming into smart cities!
