I'm sure there will be "multiple firsts" -- depending on what marketing people define as "first" with qualifiers. The "tallest dwarf" contest is the classic example.

I really don't know who will get 5G first. I assume it won't be the US. We'll probably be not first...

While I accept your arguments/science, I will offer these two points:
1) This was before the days of smartphone penetration. Definitely pre-iPhone. We're talking tiny little flip phones. So it is unlikely that these were "always-on" signals (unlike with many smartphones today).
2) One evening, when we were in downtown Seoul, we came across a lost little girl. She didn't speak English, and our Korean was extremely limited/terrible, but we did our best to help her.
Finally, all was well when her cellular phone rang. It was her mom calling her. They were quickly reunited.

@freehe: Fair, but realistically, to speak of recent history, cities NEVER seem to be ready for the Olympics really -- and often wind up devastated once the Olympics leave town (both infrastructurally and economically/debt-wise).
I remember breathing a huge sigh of relief when the City of Boston (my neck of the woods) told the IOC to stick their offer for the Olympics where the sun don't shine.

@elizabethv, Wow that is very disturbing. It reminds me of parents who put leaches on their kids when going shopping. Parents are either not concerned or unaware of the harmful effects of having cell phones near your body and have been linked to cancer and addiction.

I'm surprised more countries are not listed on the list: Stockholm, Sweden and Tallinn, Estonia, Finland, Netherlands, France, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia. It would be interesting to see the cost of implementing 5G in each country.

South Korea
I said South Korea because they are working diligently to be the first to deploy 5G as a result of the Olympics. I am surprised to see Turkey on the list.

It's not just size but also actual location/geography. What resources are/have and are/have not been available? This helps to dictate adaptability for and preference to various transformational technologies.

I have to wonder why Turkey is on this list at all. I mean, sure, there have been 5G tests there, but is it really in the running?

Turkey's mobile broadband penetration rate is about 60% or so.. while other countries have rates that exceed 100%. So I doubt Turkey is going to leapfrog to 5G without a more solid user base.
