You are right, we have been...

I believe it varies from company to company, but agree with you that tone must be set by the leadership. Then things can evolve and be planned down the lane.

Re: Upskilling Challenge
You and I had a brief "virtual colloquoy" on Culture.   I would argue that the tone must be set though by the leadership--Telenor seems to be the exception, not the rule.   There continues to be an implicit disregard for the Human Element (something that all here in TT have had me underscore)....

Re: Upskilling Challenge
In general the way it works is: Companies have training departments. They develop training programs every year which is focussed inline with company's new vision or initiatives. Besides they also consider any new products that company is getting, so employees could be up to speed.

I hear you. Times have changed now. Unlike past, there are many choices now. There is no need to just wait for these corporate training alone. It is up to an individual to take an initiative, options are endless. But having these corporate mandatory training help people that lack initiative or self motivation. Atleast they get upskilled by force and get benefitted.

Focus areas
the focus for all should be on five key competency areas: digital marketing, digital channels, applied analytics, design and product development.

Thereis absolutely no debate nevessary about  need for upskilling in corporate world. It has multiple benefits besides learning like help networking, good source of recharging outside of routine daily responsibilities etc.

What really graed my attention is the key areas mentioned for upskilling, majority of them are around digitalization. That really speaks a lot about company's vision.

Re: Upskilling Challenge
Absoluely, Upskilling isn't completely new. It always existed in entreprise. There are some companies that treaditionally are continuing that with a strong belief that these kind of trainings help for employees professional and personal well being. I have been part of many such corporate training / upskilling sessions and personaly feel that they are very helpful in multiple aspects - for learning, networking as wells gives a nice break to ones routene at work.

Re: Upskilling Challenge
It is up to us.    There is plenty of opportunities to stay involved in a way to make a difference--it requires a life-long investment of time and engagement.    Employers, though, seem to at times pay lipservice to it.

The alternative is automation, isn't it?   We can do better right?

The question is how.

Re: Upskilling Challenge
afwriter,

The biggest problem is that recertification/continuing education etc. programs tend to spawn "training" operations that exist only to feed the requirements, often diluting the effect (anyone who teaches finds themselves in "nothingburger" training classes from time to time, in which some administrator, desperate to provide continuing ed for the requirements, hired The Guy In A Suit Who Explains the Obvious).  Sadly, I've already seen a couple of "data science" classes offered that contain almost no data science, just exhortations to appreciated how much data science is going to make everything else more data science-y.

So the step beyond will be (as it is with education, law, accounting, and many kinds of engineering and medicine) to start certifying the courses with some system, which in turn will also have to be monitored and operated ...

The price of professionalism, and of a more sophisticated future, is always-increasing overhead.
