I completely agree. I think it’s important for fresh, new ideas. Instead of going off another company and just building on it.

@Ariella - That sounds hilarious. And it would be great timing for a spinoff. Perhaps about a person in charge of team relations, with North Korea supposedly deciding to join in the fun at the end of the year.

@elizabethv Yes, it happens both in nonprofits and for-profit organizations. Some of this was spoofed very well in a British show about getting ready for the 2012 olympics in which the person in charge of sustainability insisted on useless wind turbine on the site. They also faked planting trees and things of that sort.

@afwriter - I think that idea holds not only real merit, but truth. And it should certainly be employed. Upskilling internally rings more along the lines of indoctrination than a genuine concern for continued knowledge to remain competetitive. That said, at University of Phoenix, all upskilling was done internally. And I was happy to leave when I did.

@Ariella - I've really noticed that too. Even in non-profit organizations, there is a lot more that seems to be for show than actual, legitimate substance. Of course the leaders and managers are good at talking big game, but to anyone who is paying attention, it generally isn't hard to see that it is mostly just talk. Perhaps with some good intent.

Nothing New?
Telenor CEO Sigve Brekke this week issued a challenge to his employee base, including more than 30,000 employees across 12 countries: to complete 40 hours of learning during 2018.
Is it just me, or does this challenge almost seem behind the times? Continuing Education has been a focus at every job I've held for over 10 years now. Sometimes it drives me up a wall, but in general I can see the benefit of it. Esepcially in the technology field, I would think everyone would have been requiring this, well, years ago.

@mpouraryan Absolutely. I notice that about so many programs that are meant to make companies sound forward-thinking, like sustainability initiatives, as well as commitments to diversity. But when you see what's really going on, they are more about appearances than working things out to make a real long-term difference.

As I read through this discourse, I think what we're saying is that we agree--the question is how to align it to the company's long-term strategy and not merely pay it lipservice.

I think companies should always be looking to outside sources for their upskilling. If you just have employees going to company-created seminars there is only a recycling of ideas instead of a generation of new ones.
