One network to rule them all...
A single network that's forced to share isn't actually a crazy idea -- I think the UK's Ofcom regulates its fiber network? Wireless is, however, a completely different beast. The spectrum licenses have largely been auctioned already, so it's unclear how the govt would even start to build a 5G network without taking some spectrum back somehow?

Re: Clean... Beautiful.. 5G
Well, I don't think this proposal is really the work of our so-called POTUS. It's from his advisors -- who are just naive and inexperienced in government roles. But I do find it surprising that "nationalizing" 5G wouldn't be something that they would normally call "socialist" or something along those lines. But this administration is full of contradictions, so perhaps nothing should be surprising anymore -- and the cognitive dissonance should stop alarming anyone.

Re: Clean... Beautiful.. 5G
I would think that this is just more chest pounding from a leader who speaks first and thinks second, if at all. I haven't read the proposal but just on the surface, this seems infeasible. Plus, wouldn't this take a lot of taxpayer money not just to initiate, but to continually oversee? Possibly even a whole new agency?

Re: Clean... Beautiful.. 5G
@mhhf1ve, exactly!  Without a cohesive strategy this could open pandora's box!  And you are correct about the motivations that would be attributed to such a proposal in the past.

That is why there needs to be a comprehensive "design" (i.e., strategy) that will guide the development and ensure the steps we take are steps forward not back.

Re: Clean... Beautiful.. 5G
There are a lot of outlandish proposals.. (ahem, there's one out there about our southern neighbor paying for an impractical non-fence barrier..)

Perhaps there are some good ideas in the proposal -- and I'm surprised that Trump's base isn't shocked at "nationalizing" things. (Though I suppose it's harder to tie healthcare to national security...) If the Obama administration had a leaked proposal like this -- I can just imagine the backlash of arguments against it.

> "Anonymity would not be allowed..."

Ha! Good luck on that. They'd have to change the whole foundation of the internet to eliminate anonymity. And what would that even mean to do so? It wouldn't necessarily improve security. We know who all the 9/11 terrorists in the airplanes were -- and that didn't do anything to prevent it. Anonymity is something that can be both good and bad. And it's not something that we should waste resources trying to eliminate completely, IMO.

@mhhf1ve, I am with you on this!  It sounds more like an aspirational goal than a strategic one.  The President may like that outcome but the market will not work that way, as we know.  And your point about the recent steps to auction off are a great example of how the train is already moving down the tracks, picking up the tracks and redirecting them now would not be easy.  Just look at the turmoil still under way with net neutrality?

Municipal fiber networks aren't crazy, but a nationalized 5G network sounds a bit outlandish. How would a national 5G network even work? Would the US govt take back the wireless spectrum it auctioned off already?
