Facebook open source project for 5G networking??
What happens when Facebook releases an open source project to disrupt the cell network ecosystem?

http://www.wired.com/2016/02/facebook-open-source-wireless-gear-forge-5g-world/

Is this yet another standard to compete with and confuse customers with?

@mhhf1ve I saw that mentioned. Facebook is now trying to take over in another way. You'd think the heads of these companies would be content with their billions and leave other areas for other companies to work on.

Re: Facebook open source project for 5G networking??
Facebook releasing open source hardware for wireless 5G networking *should* benefit the telcos by lowering the operating costs. Not so sure that the hardware suppliers are going to be so happy, but the telcos are also going to get some competition if FB puts some autonomous internet drones in the sky soon, too.

This is all part of the Telco Transformation -- where companies like FB and Google are pushing telcos to compete and do more than they've done in the past. The telco industry is going to see some incredible innovation in the next few years.

It is up to those of us who embrace this to make it simple--we should also be able to welcome any initiative to disrupt cell networks--right?    There are some who have tried in their own way--such as FreedomPop.

Thanks @batye for your thoughts--I always somehow thought that the major players in Canadian Telco (Rogers et. al) have been at the forefront.    It is also frankly surprising that you noted that Canada has to play catch up.

@Ariella  I would say 5 to 10 in regular technology behind USA - depending on the price of implementation...

ps: off the record - in the military tech we are at least 15 to 20 years behind USA...

sad reality - if Russia/NK invade our North... I will fight for Queen and Country but I would have very outdated weapons and tech at my disposal...

@Batye sounds like you mean it in Terry Pratchett's sense. It's the title of one of his novels and references a curse that says, "may you live in interesting times."

So you've already had military training?

@Batye - Well the fact that Canada appears on this list is somewhat hopeful then, right?  But I would imagine there are quite a few areas in Canada where geography alone would make this difficult, if not impossible to reach.  I remember friends well outside of Calgary having trouble last year with 4G speeds.

Perhaps Canada will get Facebook drones or Google Loon balloons for better internet access before the US does? Wireless delivered via high-altitude networks might be the tech that leapfrogs fiber/cable. And I'd guess that Canada has fewer qualms about the use of its airspace for drones than the US does.

It would be nice if Google Loon could work in North America... I'm not optimistic, though, that it will ever come to the US because we have too many FAA restrictions on our airspace. But maybe a Facebook drone will be able to get the proper FAA approvals.

@mhhf1ve - Thanks for the head's up on Google Loon, which I had to...errr...Google, but I had never heard of it.  This is downright amazing - and it doesn't surprise me at all the pilot was in New Zealand where the Wifi is fast and nearly everywhere.  I island hopped for two weeks two years ago and frankly their 4G put the one in the US to shame.

I know Google Loon has been working on its balloons in the southern hemisphere, and I think they've almost mastered how to navigate their balloons using the weather patterns down there. It will be interesting to see if they can also do the same in the northern hemisphere.. and provide wireless effectively in North America!

This is really surprisng to know. 5-10 years of lag time in technology is a huge concern. At the current rate and pace i can even say that some of the trends would just become obsolete.

How is Canada practically dealing with this? I always have a perception that US and Canada are almost at the same pace.

I'm curious how you think Freedompop is disrupting anything in the cellular industry? They are filling a gap, really. They work off of Sprint mostly, so Freedompop is basically a kind of Sprint reseller with a slightly different business model than most other carriers. It's not exactly disruption in my opinion because they're zero chance that Freedompop will ever have more than a few million customers at most. If they do break out and get bigger... they'll either be cut off at the knees by Sprint or absorbed by Sprint somehow. They have no real leverage to expand beyond Sprint, to my knowledge.

Now.. Tracfone... that's seems like a more interesting MVNO player because it has deals with multiple carrier networks and it could potentially get loyal customers to stick with it even if a few of their carrier relationships went south. I'd think Tracfone could follow a Google Fi model more easily than Freedompop could... but maybe I'm wrong?

What you say as "filling a gap" is what I view as disruption--yes although they are a "Sprint reseller", but they have created a niche that in my view has forced folks to "adjust their strategy--that's why I submit the 2 year contract is gone, there are more "friendlier" terms on Equipment & other things--we have scratched the surface on it.

4.5G vs 5G
It will be interesting to see which network will work better. The 4.5G or the 5G. Even though the 5G network I don't see being run for a few years, I'm interested in seeing how the 4.5G will compare.

I can see the pay off in waiting for the 5G, but I also see why having the 4.5G can be beneficial. Espcially if it's faster and the connection is more relaible than the 4G. I just hope the payoff of the 5G will be worth it.

4.5 birds in the hand are worth 5 in the bush.
I think they have the right idea.  While AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are bragging about their 5G plans -- which, realistically, aren't going to be fully realized any time soon -- Qualcomm and Huawei have been working on something a bit simpler and still much faster and better than we have now.  If the speed and quality differences are substantial enough and that can be demonstrated as a big selling point, expect substantial market share shifts.
