Re: Facebook open source project for 5G networking??
@mhhf1ve That is a possibility. Google did launch some balloons to test them out recently.

@Batye sounds like you mean it in Terry Pratchett's sense. It's the title of one of his novels and references a curse that says, "may you live in interesting times."

So you've already had military training?

Re: Facebook open source project for 5G networking??
Perhaps Canada will get Facebook drones or Google Loon balloons for better internet access before the US does? Wireless delivered via high-altitude networks might be the tech that leapfrogs fiber/cable. And I'd guess that Canada has fewer qualms about the use of its airspace for drones than the US does.

Re: Facebook open source project for 5G networking??
> "we should also be able to welcome any initiative to disrupt cell networks--right?    There are some who have tried in their own way--such as FreedomPop.."

I'm curious how you think Freedompop is disrupting anything in the cellular industry? They are filling a gap, really. They work off of Sprint mostly, so Freedompop is basically a kind of Sprint reseller with a slightly different business model than most other carriers. It's not exactly disruption in my opinion because they're zero chance that Freedompop will ever have more than a few million customers at most. If they do break out and get bigger... they'll either be cut off at the knees by Sprint or absorbed by Sprint somehow. They have no real leverage to expand beyond Sprint, to my knowledge.

Now.. Tracfone... that's seems like a more interesting MVNO player because it has deals with multiple carrier networks and it could potentially get loyal customers to stick with it even if a few of their carrier relationships went south. I'd think Tracfone could follow a Google Fi model more easily than Freedompop could... but maybe I'm wrong?

Re: Facebook open source project for 5G networking??
@Batye - Well the fact that Canada appears on this list is somewhat hopeful then, right?  But I would imagine there are quite a few areas in Canada where geography alone would make this difficult, if not impossible to reach.  I remember friends well outside of Calgary having trouble last year with 4G speeds.

Re: Facebook open source project for 5G networking??
@Ariella  I would say 5 to 10 in regular technology behind USA - depending on the price of implementation...

ps: off the record - in the military tech we are at least 15 to 20 years behind USA...

sad reality - if Russia/NK invade our North... I will fight for Queen and Country but I would have very outdated weapons and tech at my disposal...
