A Billion is a lot.
I get that 1.5 billion is a lot of money, but am I the only one who thinks that this is figure is slightly underwhelming?

Re: A Billion is a lot.
When it comes to service for phones, some people are opting for cheaper wifi services.
One example of this is Google Fi, and it can be argued that if you don't go to a lot of places outside of wifi coverage, it's actually a good deal. It costs much less than what you pay for Verizon or AT&T.

Re: A Billion is a lot.
Is Google Fi a "for profit" service? It seems like it's not quite maximizing revenues -- instead aiming to lock users into a Nexus-Android environment and getting more people into the Google ecosystem of devices and services.

Re: A Billion is a lot.
I agree that the figure does seem "underwhelming," considering that according to research I recently looked at, the prediction is that by 2020, there will be 11.6 billion mobile-connected devices.
Re: A Billion is a lot.
This is part of the broader picture though--isn't it? Isn't that the key question? Also, the number I have seen is about 30 Billion--now the question is how will the bandwidth be supported especially as carriers seem not to be able to support the existing bandwidth--are they?

Re: A Billion is a lot.
Wifi is a temporary solution for wireless networks that don't have the capacity to handle the traffic-- along with "binge on" solutions that throttle user bandwidth. Maybe when 5G is actually here, we'll see what happens to Wifi-cellular handoffs.... (I suspect users will not use wifi to 5G as much)

I find it curious that you note this to be "temporary"--As we are progressing, 5G may well not be enough as we are witness to the iOT evolution. That's the key.

As I reflected upon your thought @batye, I could not help but wonder whether we should in fact accept change or not--transformation is happening too rapidly especially as we are witness to and have yet to truly understand the 4th Industrial Revolution that may render many things we do today irrelevant. It is the ultimate challenge in this transformation quest.

There is no question @batye in the question for transformation, others will not sit idly by--a perfect example is what Blackberry in your home country of Canada has gone thru--did not realize the transformation that has been spearheaded by Apple & Samsung despite the launch of the Privv. The need to anticipate is key--although we have someone like Elon Musk (that someone said recently should merge Tesla with Apple and he take charge of Apple as Steve did with Pixar), what is the future holding? That's the key transformational question...isn't it?

Thanks for the comments @batye--if you could reflect upon Blackberry's stumbles from your perspective it will be helpful in assessing "lessons learnt" for those who aspire to be on the Transformation bandwagon.

@mpouraryan thank you, in my books we need to follow law of the land, and follow progress... not to do as BB did hoping to get away with breaking the privacy laws... bending the law as need it... as technology keep grow...

But here is something for you to consider @batye: Privacy is virtually gone--isn't it? That's the ultimate dilemma as we are witness to this transformation we all agitate for.

Europe is doing something about it--for instance with what it has done with the "Right to be Forgotten, although it has a lot of challenges with it. It is up to us to be able to make sure we remain vigilant--something I've noted throughout my comments.

> "I find it curious that you note this to be "temporary"...
Well, I mean that the current WiFi+cellular combinations for services like Google Fi are a temporary solution for poor cell coverage. 5G cell coverage is bound to get better, and it may even include some kind of WiFi-handoff protocols... but I think people over-estimate the utility of WiFi. Although the definition of WiFi may also evolve and expand into other spectrum, so maybe someday WiFi and cellular coverage might not be so distinctly different?

Re: A Billion is a lot.
Appreciate the clarification @mhhf1ve!! I would argue that the perceived "grand canyon" has already been evolving--and services are developing to leverage it all. WiFi will always be part of it all--especially for those of us who always want to leverage the free bandwidth out there.

@mhhf1ve yes you are right, but I think changes in hardware/upgrades will get improved and increase capacity...
Re: A Billion is a lot.
I think 5G could be "enough" -- except that it's too cost prohibitive. Thus why "Carrier WiFi" is helping to carry the day so far.

Re: A Billion is a lot.
I think we need to define what "enough" is.. I think the bandwidth *exists* -- but it may not have been auctioned off by the FCC just yet. In a few more years, tho, I think more empty "TV spectrum" will be freed up and ready to be put to use in the 5G space. That should be "enough" bandwidth as long as the companies that buy it... actually use it.

I am always skeptical of predictions that never seem to be checked after the "time is up"... IDC has made a bunch of predictions for hardware growth, and usually it's a linear or exponential extrapolation of the current dicey sales figures.... The definition of an IoT "Thing" isn't even that well-defined. Are they counting smartphones? cars?

Or are we still talking about WiFi in the future?
Re: A Billion is a lot.
@mhh: Smartphones are considered "traditional" devices these days. But cars are being counted in IoT figures.

WIFI in the billions
I'm not surprised becasue WIFI offers internet connection to a lot of peoplethat can be picked up from others if they don't have a secure password so keep up the good work.
