I think 5G could be "enough" -- except that it's too cost prohibitive. Thus why "Carrier WiFi" is helping to carry the day so far.

@srufolo1: Can you provide a link to the study and/or tell me who/what entity authored the study?
Meanwhile, IDC is predicting well over 20b connected IoT "Things" alone (let alone traditional devices) by 2020.

I find it curious that you note this to be "temporary"--As we are progressing, 5G may well not be enough as we are witness to the iOT evolution. That's the key.

Wifi is a temporary solution for wireless networks that don't have the capacity to handle the traffic-- along with "binge on" solutions that throttle user bandwidth. Maybe when 5G is actually here, we'll see what happens to Wifi-cellular handoffs.... (I suspect users will not use wifi to 5G as much)

Is Google Fi a "for profit" service? It seems like it's not quite maximizing revenues -- instead aiming to lock users into a Nexus-Android environment and getting more people into the Google ecosystem of devices and services.

This is part of the broader picture though--isn't it? Isn't that the key question? Also, the number I have seen is about 30 Billion--now the question is how will the bandwidth be supported especially as carriers seem not to be able to support the existing bandwidth--are they?

I agree that the figure does seem "underwhelming," considering that according to research I recently looked at, the prediction is that by 2020, there will be 11.6 billion mobile-connected devices.

WIFI in the billions
I'm not surprised becasue WIFI offers internet connection to a lot of peoplethat can be picked up from others if they don't have a secure password so keep up the good work.
