@mhhf1ve sad reality people know it, they should concentrate on driving but they keep doing something else thinking it not gonna happens to them...

Why is it such a big deal? What can we do to truly change the conversation? If we get to driverless cars, then we have a new paradigm to think about and reflect upon. Right?

It is quite a challenge--in my home state of California, it is indeed illegal. However, a day does not pass without my seeing this being violated. I personally do not get why it is so vital. It can wait--unless it has to do with one's children or one's parents. Why are we so mesmerized as we are?

I've seen some public service ads on buses in my city that remind people that using a smartphone -- even when stopped at a red light -- as a driver is illegal. I've seen plenty of drivers checking messages at a red light... and it seems harmless, but apparently, it could result in a fine (if a cop catches you).
If you think the odds of getting caught are low.. I've seen a few news stories that cops are posing as homeless people at long red light intersections.. and handing out tickets to drivers who are texting. That seems a bit too sneaky to be anything other than a revenue generator for the police dept.

Watching videos while driving is a significant problem. Mobile video streaming makes it easier to do.. and it's just dangerous for everyone. I hope that either autonomous driving comes soon... or more cars at least get proximity warning alerts so that drivers can be told when they're tailgating too close or about to crash....

@mhh1ve - Not that I haven't seen people watching some kind of portable media while driving in the past. I actually saw it for the first time a few years ago. I wasn't able to tell what the device was they were using, or how. I just remember seeing a 7/8 inch screen attached to their dashboard and clearly playing a movie. (You could tell by the speed that the screen changed, I was never close enough to actually see the movie.)
The percentage of people who seem to have no problem using their phones while they are driving is astounding. Even tonight, on my way to work, I could tell the person in the car next to me what playing on their phone. (No idea what they were doing specifically, I was driving.) They weren't even trying to hide it, it was very obviously easily seen from the driver's window. The funny thing is, for the most part, the age range of the people I see on their phones while driving is upper-30s to mid-50s. I rarely see teenagers or even young-20s on their phones while driving. Though I would believe the younger crowd is more likely to be lured by the ability to stream while driving than the older.

Seriously. And people driving Teslas are abusing Autopilot and risking their lives while trying to multitask while they should be driving.
Streaming video is great if you have time to kill while waiting in line for something (or are safely in public transportation), but I hope the lure of mobile streaming video doesn't make it more dangerous for people to travel around....

People already stay glued to their phones while commuting, whether they're texting, checking social media sites, playing games, listening to music, or watching a video, so I don't believe it will be quite as transformative as all that.

Video is really a great way for providers to further monetize data. My hope is that is successful, because I'd rather that be the business model over providers utilizing my data to target things like ads at my wireless devices. I'm not particularly someone who uses mobile video a lot, so that's somewhat of a concern for me.
